Losing Weight for a Baby

ANSWERED

I  just bought my FitBit yesterday (Charge), and I am so excited to start using it! I have been wanting to lose weight for a while, but I got the push I needed when I realized the reason we are having difficult conceiving might have something to do with my weight. I am 5'7 and 245, so definitely overweight. My husband and I have been trying for a year, and we have had three miscarriages. I am certain we have other issues as well (weight doesn't explain the miscarriages), but I want to be the absolute best I can. I can't control much in this situation, but what I can control, I need to. Does anyone else have an experiences/encouragement/advice they can share with me?

We desperately want a baby.

Welcome to the Fitbit boards!

Very sorry to hear about your miscarriages and your struggles 😞

I suffered two miscarriages and I have one child that was delivered early due to issues related to my weight and blood pressure. I started out last June at 235 pounds and I'm now down to 172! Fitbit has been amazing and my biggest motivator. The forums and discussions are so helpful. I personally never followed a specific diet plan, but rather monitored my calorie intake (1200-1500 in the beginning and 1500-1800 now) and started out walking a mile a day with some light weights and core workouts. What personally worked for me is not having a cheat day or cheat meal, I would have a "reward meal" once a month. I felt it gave me more accountablity for my own actions. I limited the amount of bread & starch I was eating and started replacing the pasta for veggies and breads for low carb wraps. I have had my weeks where I gained a little back or didn't loose anything. Those things may happen to you as well, but it's a natural part of weight loss.

Honestly, you have got to want to do it for you. This has to be your battle. If you want it bad enough you will be able to make healthy changes and lose the weight, but if you aren't all in it won't happen. Every person is different and your body needs as far as calorie and nutrient intake will not be the same. Someone who is on the Atkins diet or Paleo diet may have excellent results, but it may not do a thing for you. Trial and error is never a bad thing. I'm not an expert by no means but certain things worked for me. So....here are my tips for starting out 🙂

1. Cut out all soda, sugary drinks, and only have water and real juices on occasion.

2. Dedicate at least 30 mins a day for some type of cardio, walking, jogging.

3. Figure out your BMR (Basal metabolic rate) and determine what calorie deficit works daily for you.

4. Don't have "NO" foods, the foods you swear off and say you will never have because it will make it that much more difficult to stay away. If you want that ice cream or some chips, eat them. But have one serving size by measuring it out. Eventually you will be able to control your portions with ease.

Good luck and I hope you have the best success!

Wanted to offer encouragement.  Miscarriages are heartbreaking.  Hang in there and do what you can to get as healthy as possible - weight issues can certainly alter the ability to become pregnant in the first place.  I guess my main experience here is I did become unexpectedly pregnant after losing about 100 lbs. though I had not really had difficulty getting pregnant prior to that, as she was my third "bonus baby."  She is a joy and now in Kindergarten.  Again, hang in there.  Pretty soon you may have a house full of kids getting on your last nerve. :0)

If you are ever able to have a baby you should name it fitbit that would be funny. Anyhow you can do anything if you set your mind to it and keep working at it.
