Motivation and Accountability

I'm in Alberta and I am slated to see a specialist regarding hip replacement surgery in a few months, but I need to lose at least 40lbs or the doctor won't see me. I need to get my eating under control and bring my exercise level up again if I can handle the pain. I was shocked when I did a metabolic test and it said my body was registering at 75 years old!

I like to swim but right now our pool is closed and being winter it's hard to ride my bike on the ice. I have decided that I will walk my dog to the airport and back each day (about 1.5 kms round trip) if the weather is not too bad out. I will slowly increase the distance if my hip allows it when the weather gets better. I also do a 30 minute low impact cardio workout at least once a week.

I use Spark People for my food plan because I find it down to earth on food suggestions and easiest to follow along with for meal planning and it will record my inputs to my fitbit as well so I don't have to put everything in twice.

I'm wondering if there are other users on here in a similar situation that would like to partner up to help each other with accountability and motivation.  I currently weigh 264 lbs so I've got a long way to go.

I'm not in a similar situation, so I'm no help there. I'd like to wish you well though. Good luck!

I think this website has good information about hip replacement, if you need that.

@Theressah  Studies show that people who begin an exercise program to lose weight, eat more and don't lose weight.  Exercise is critically important for good health though.  My exercise habit of many decades went right out the window recently when I got shingles and was in great pain.  I can't imagine you doing exercise while in pain.  With the weather you have maybe you could get a stationary bike unless that hurts your hip. I bought a used one for $25.  Later I got another but in the recumbent style.  You can read on either one,  Oddly, rowing machines are very bad for people with hip trouble.   Bikes are great for thighs and you would be warm.  Consumer reports Magazine suggests that people not buy features on sports equipment that they will not use that makes the equipment cost more.  You can get an inexpensive treadmill that you could read books on while walking if you never plan to run on it.  I NEVER have run on my treadmill.  You don't need programs etc.  if you have fast music on a nearby TV and are going to read.  I'm building my habit back now a few more minutes and a little faster again each day.

Most people, I read, except for good cooks, eat about 10 things, over and over.  One thing that might help you "get control" and lose weight is just make a list of the the things you eat the most often when you are not starting a new diet.  Note the worst high calorie bombs.  If you could try to replace even just one or two of those favorites, with something you truly like just as much, it would be a big help.  A big part of our eating, like everything else, is just HABIT.    There are some foods that you know to keep on hand, you know what it takes to fix it, and you know you will like the way it turns out.   Choose a few new things to make into habits.??
