New Day 1 - encouragement required

So, I am back to the dreaded day one of a new weight loss journey.

My body is currently healing -  from a torn ligament in each ankle, weak muscle in left thigh, and a lung infection - and all I want to do is workout at my old pace. Sadly, I'm physically worn out due to the injury & due to the severe fatigue Lyme disease brings on. I'm trying to lose over 100 lbs, but I keep being told to go slow with my recovery.

With all the stress of these issues, and work piling up, I sadly have slipped into my old habits. Either I quietly skip meals until a few days have passed and then binge on a large meal, or I eat so little throughout the day and too exhausted to move. I don't know what I can eat, cause all the doctors I see just tell me not to eat or just eat less - even after I inform them of my history with an eating disorder with food avoidance.

I'm feeling frustrated, and isolated, and a bit too out of control.

So i'm starting again...

physio 3 times a day, logging all my meals, sticking to a meal schedule, walking 8,000 steps per day, and trying to be patient with myself.

any words of encouragement would be appreciated xx

my 1 complaint? my fit bit food log doesn't have a photo component to log my meals.

My son had Lyme disease and two months of doxycycline cured him. Officially, they don't recognize that Lyme disease exists in Colorado, so we convinced the doctor my son had acne.

I'm going to make a shocking statement about exercise. You do not need to exercise much for weight control. Maybe 20 minutes a day of walking is all. It doesn't even help much in weight control. The key is the food you eat. With Lyme disease, you are likely too weak to exercise. Exercise can drive lung infections into the heart and kill you. Light walking is fine.

Everyone should understand that doctors in the United States do not get nutrition training. In fact, they are not allowed to give more than superficial diet advice.

I'd like you to understand that being overweight is not your fault. It's a result of a hundred years or so of false advertising and manufacturing of poisonous foods by the food industry. Doctors are mostly into profit-centered medicine and are more interested in dispensing pills that don't cure diseases. Infections are an exception. They are good with most of those.

Now, for a way out.

Go to this webpage and click on all the links on the first section of the right side. Study them somewhat closely. The hard part is figuring out how simple this way of eating can be. There is no calorie counting, although you will be eating at a deficit. There is no hunger. Anytime you feel hungry, feel free to eat.

Dr. McDougall has been focused on nutrition since the early 70's. What he recommends works. It will prevent, arrest or cure most of the diseases associated with old age. I've been following it for almost four years. I'm 65 and have nothing wrong with me. The way of eating cured my incurable neuroendocrine cancer.

He is not the only one recommending this way of eating. He is an internal medicine doctor, so he presents the broadest spectrum of benefits. He also published more books and videos than most.

In a nutshell... this will take a bit to adjust to.

1. No animal products

2. No oils like olive oil, etc.

3. No refined foods. In other words, eat only plant foods bought in their natural state. Half the plate should be starches. The other half should be vegetables. About three servings of fresh fruit is fine.

If you choose this way of eating, I suggest having a lipid panel done ten days after you start adhering to it quite closely. For simplicity, check the total cholesterol to see if it has come down.

If you are diabetic, closely monitor your blood sugar. In some cases, it can cure type 2 diabetes in a few days. At most, it will take a month or two. If you are a type 1 diabetic, it can reduce your need for insulin.

The biggest complaint people have about this way of eating is people get tired in the first few days. This is because they think in terms of other ways of eating and don't eat enough. Don't be afraid to pile food on your plate and get seconds if you like. It's best to wait about 15 minutes to get seconds.

The easiest way to log food is to take a picture of what you eat. Then use large icons in the folder to see what you've eaten. Even if you eat something you shouldn't, snap a picture. Don't feel guilty. Just move on to a better meal.

Now for words of encouragement. You may have heard obesity causes many diseases. That is not entirely true. Obesity is a marker for many kinds of diseases. In six hours, you can greatly reduce your chances of a heart attack. In three weeks, you can make yourself virtually heart attack proof.

Isolation is a huge problem. Feel free to send me a private message at any time. If you like, I'll give you simple recipes to get started. You can learn one meal at a time. Variety is nice, but not necessary. You can repeat the same three simple meals every day if you like. Often, people with eating disorders prefer eating the same foods all the time. Everyone is different.

Going slowly with your ligaments is good advice. Just walk enough to keep them from getting stiff. Walking a dozen steps every half hour or so is probably enough. The muscle in your left thigh will likely heal in time if you don't pull it. Do what you can without pain.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

@SecretPassword hey there..wishing you fast healing. The only other thing I would mention is... your first sentence.. it sums up how you feel about this whole thing. I would maybe encourage you to figure out what specifically do you hate about day 1 through day 2000. if you figure out what you hate, you can make changes so hate becomes moderate dislike or acceptance.. maybe? Regardless of what you choose- totally rooting for you and in your corner. best to you... E

First, GOOD FOR YOU for facing up to your "dread," for being willing to be vulnerable, and for being brave right out of the gate.

Second, I'm so sorry someone used that as an opportunity to try to sell you a weight loss program. I trust you're ignoring that. Smiley Indifferent Just stick to your goals--one step at a time, with lots of patience. (Just saying that to you was a great reminder for me! So, you've helped me out, too. Thanks!)

Understand your "dread" message, started that journey myself too many times....it's dread but it's also some excitement that you are strong enough to want to make a change again, that you can learn from past attempts to refine/improve approach....that while it's incredibly difficult it's also something to look forward to because there were enough bad things to push you to change that you can move away from.  Have had lyme and it's def. something to plan around while you treat the infection...throw in work stress (always my killer) and there are hills to scale.

So understand the challenge, but give yourself a chance to look forward to what positive things will happen from the change.  Think back to past attempts...what worked, what didn't, you know better then anyone how your mind deals w/ the changes/challenges.  Can you improve your approach?  Focus on the things that worked and look at options to improve the things that were hardest/didn't work.  For me it's building blocks and finding small things to keep forward momentum.  Take a few weeks to work on diet/nutrition (I suggest finding a GOOD nutritionist you can talk to and work with on your goals.....I find Dr's are woefully bad at the nuances) alone, adjust to it, allow your body to start feeling better on that Before adding exercise to the routines .....and when you start, start slow w/ exercise, again allow your self to build small wins to boost confidence..and if a path doesn't feel right, adjust and try something different.  Small wins...and when there is a loss, try not to let it linger (hard one for me).  Good Luck!
