New Year to April Fools weight loss challenge, weekly weigh-in

This is a spin-off of the venerable Weekly Weigh In topic that now has 2500+ posts spanning over four years and is therefore a bit crowded. The idea is the same: to provide accountability and motivation to fellow community members who wish to shed some weight over the next three months.

The rules are flexible: to report weight (and any other metrics) on a weekly basis (you can pick any day you like). I’ll personally report average weight for the previous week every Monday, starting next Monday (Dec-30, so technically not quite New Year). This coming week will provide the baseline/starting point.

I’ve been steadily gaining about 4 kg (8.8 lbs) over the Fall, from about 60 to almost 64 kg (141 lbs):

It’s now time to get back to a leaner level, ideally around 60 kg.

Is anyone else game for this?

Start weight - 98.8 kg (218 lbs)

Goal weight at end of this challenge - 94.3 kg (208 lbs)

Week 1 - 98.8 (fitbit average) (218 lbs)

Week 2 - 99.1 (only weigh in for days)

Week 3 - 98.3 (fitbit average)

Week 4 - 98.6 (fitbit average) (217.3 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 98.6 kg

Week 5 - 97.6 (fitbit average) (215 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 98.0 kg

Week 6 - 97.0 (fitbit average) (213.8 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 97.5 kg

Week 7 - 95.9 (fitbit average) (211.4 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 96.7 kg

Week 8 - 95.8 (fitbit average) (211.2 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 96.1 kg

Week 9 - 96.0 (fitbit average) (211.6 lbs) ---- TrendWeight 96.1 kg

Week 10 - 94.8 (fitbit average) (208.9 lbs) ----- Trendweight 95.4 kg

Week 11 - 95.0 (fitbit average) (209.4 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 95.2 kg

Week 12 - 95.2 (fitbit average) (209.8 lbs) ----- TrendWeight 95.2 kg

I have been very inconsistent and it shows with my weight gain. I am surprised that TrendWeight is showing a flat line rather than a rise. I shall cling on to that, rather than use the weight gain as an excuse to go totally rogue!

Hi @Baltoscott  Thank you for the encouraging post from a few days ago. Less snacking definitely makes tracking easier! Tracking did have the effect of curtailing a lot of my snacking/nibbling because I realized how many calories I was consuming doing that.

It sounds like you have been very successful in losing weight and keeping it off. Long term maintenance is where I usually completely fail. It is encouraging to see that you, and others here, have lost weight and are keeping if off by not going back to old habits and by addressing any movement back upwards.

Down 2.3 pounds for the last 13 days (almost 2 weeks).

Starting: 170

Goal: 164

Week 0: 170 (1/1/2020)

Week 1: 169.3 (1/8/2020)

Week 2: 169.0 (1/15/2020)

Week 3: 168.5 (1/22/2020)

Week 4: 167.0 (1/29/2020)

Week 5: 166.0 (2/5/2020)

Week 6: 164.9 (2/12/2020)

Week 7: 163.7 (2/19/2020)

Week 8: 162.8 (2/29/2020)

Week 9: 161.9 (3/06/2020

Week 10: 160.7 (3/13/2020)

Week 11: 158.4 (3/26/2020)

Total = 11.6 pounds lost

I am finally in the “normal” BMI weight range – although at the very top end.

Exercise last week was very inconsistent, better on track this week but more like 4 miles of walking a day instead of 5. Tracking food has also been very inconsistent. I need to get back on that. I’ve been so distracted the last couple of weeks …  Only six more days until April 1st.

@shm  Well done! I look at my BMI and shudder. But it is on the way down which is the main thing.

I am doing a happy dance for you, as this is an excellent achievement 🏅

Today is my last weigh-in for the challenge.  Total loss on TrendWeight from 3 months ago is a hair less than 2.5 lbs. Not what I was aiming for (originally about 8 lbs) but I am happy with the experiment.  To be honest, it is about what I expected given the minimal changes I made (mostly I just tried to be a more focused about how much I eat at each meal, and a little stricter about basic habits like only eating during mealtime).  To really move the needle on weight loss I have to meal plan or strictly measure everything I consume.

@shm — congratulations on getting into the ‘normal’ BMI range.  Lock in the habits you’ve built over the past three months and you are golden.

@Kanga999 — although slow weight loss when you are heavier than you want is frustrating, it is usually much more likely to stay off than quick weight loss.  Your approach is a good one.  Keep at it.

This is my last weigh in too, for this challenge. I am somewhat surprised that I actually got to my nominated weight - at least in fitbit average mode, if not TrendWeight. Truthfully, I thought it was more an ambit hope, rather than achievable. Thank you @Dominique  for starting the challenge and for your advise when I started in late January. Thanks also to @shm  and especially @Baltoscott  for your encouragement. I think having a group looking over my virtual shoulder at the scales with me each morning made for a crowded bathroom 😱 but also was the impetus that I needed - especially when I went off the rails. Thanks for having my back 😀

The scale said 156.9 this morning, down 1.5 pounds. However, I don’t think I really lost a pound and a half in 5 days. I have been eating …

Anyway, here is the final “tally” for my last post.

Starting: 170

Goal: 164

Week 0: 170 (1/1/2020)

Week 1: 169.3 (1/8/2020)

Week 2: 169.0 (1/15/2020)

Week 3: 168.5 (1/22/2020)

Week 4: 167.0 (1/29/2020)

Week 5: 166.0 (2/5/2020)

Week 6: 164.9 (2/12/2020)

Week 7: 163.7 (2/19/2020)

Week 8: 162.8 (2/29/2020)

Week 9: 161.9 (3/06/2020

Week 10: 160.7 (3/13/2020)

Week 11: 158.4 (3/26/2020)

Week 12: 156.9 (3/31/2020)

Total = 13.1 pounds lost

I have lots of work to still do on my weight/health but I am pretty happy about this.

@Kanga999 – Thank you so much for the “happy dance!” Your posts always put a big smile on my face. Congratulations on reaching your goal for this challenge! I think a big part of this is just plain old perseverance … I hope you joyfully continue with your health journey … If you can get this far you have it within you to go the rest of the way!

@Baltoscott – Thank you for all the encouragement and congratulations on the weight loss. I appreciate all of your posts because – from what I understand – you have lost weight and have been able to keep it off. That can be the biggest challenge of all (at least for me it is). Two or three pounds may not sound like a lot but I think those two or three pounds make all the difference. A weight gain of 2 or 3 pounds that is ignored turns into 5 pounds and then 10 and then can eventually balloon into 50 or more. I am hoping that when I finally get to my goal weight, I can do what you are doing and learn to watch those 2 or 3 pounds and do something.

@Dominique – Thank you for setting up the challenge. I enjoy reading your posts throughout the different threads on the fitbit community.
