New Years to Valentine's Day 2016 Challenge

Welcome to the New Year Everyone! This will start January 1, 2016 officially 🙂

If you have seen the posts before this is a challenge that everyone is invited to join to set your own personal weight loss goal for the next 6 weeks. This is all about having a great support system and most importantly feeling great and happy and healthy about yourself. Don't worry if you have bad weeks because we all go through it.

To join the challenge all you need to do is post your weight stats & check in as often as you'd like with an update or just to share a story from your week. This group has some huge inspiration in it and people that give wonderful advice.

Looking forward to catching up with all our friends from the other challenges and anyone who is new!

Thanks @saraj91 for starting up the last challenge!

Some free advice here. Go to the BMI calculator, put in your height and weight and make sure that you are in the healthy zone. This is more reliable than friends' opinions.  Since your goal is only 100 lbs I assume that you are just 5'1" or so. Some people see themselves to be heavier than they really are so hopefully that is not you and you are a petite lady.

All the best,

Barb G

Hi Folks,

My slug period of long hours sitting at the computer is now  limited as I'm back teaching exercise for seniors like me 3 days a week and ballroom dancing on 3 days as well. Thank heavens.

Check in brings good news.

Good on you, Barbara.  I would love to be back down into the 130's -- slow and steady this time.  I haven't seen those numbers since before menopause.  I'll just keep walking in that direction.  Thank's for inspiration!

Yep, I could have written your exact post. I too last saw 130s before my hysterectomy at age 38, 20+ years ago, but walking toward them now. Down 28, 50 more to go. We'll get there! Keep walking and monitor the calorie intake. Amazing how well that actually works, isn't it? One step, one ounce, one pound at a time. Becky

My first update:
Today was my First day back at work today and I had over 6k steps without trying. While on break I barely broke 3k steps (got fitbit on NYE). I was extremely exhausted and need to rest, which I did. I was trying to get a true baseline so that I'd know how many steps I naturally take.

However, the last few days, I have really uped my water but hoping I can maintain now that I'm back at work (academic coach at a high school).

How often (suggested) should we reweigh ourselves and post an update?

Dancefoxtrot,

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to check right now. Actually I am about 5'3", so maybe I will need to change my goal. My brothers friend has always joked with me about my weight seeing he thinks I'm skinny although I don't feel like I am. When I was younger some guys who liked me got mad that I was dating someone, and started saying that I looked fat and that it looked like I was pregnant, although I wasn't and won't be for awhile. It's just that type of comment sticks with you, ya know? Thanks tho! I'll be sure to check my BMI. Good Luck!

Pretty new to discussions this is only my second post. And I have been wanting to be in a challenge. Just been trying to get badges (it's kinda addicting) and eat my dietitian's advice on food. Hopefully I can get to the size I want in six weeks.Smiley Happy I have been going to the gym off and on because it's been a little intimidating to see all these smaller girls and the guys taking up the weight machines. Does anyone else experience this?

Lynn,
I've been a gym member since 1998. I remember when I first joined seeing people use a "Roman Chair" to exercise their back and butt. I tried it and couldn't even do it once. Eventually I could use it so easily it was like picking up a magazine, so easy. The same with the Elliptical, I saw people doing 30 or 40 minutes, so I tried it and could barely do 5 minutes. In 2005 I was doing 45 minutes easily. Between then and now I've had spinal surgery, so I had to dial my workouts down, got back up to my 45 minutes and had major knee problems, so I went down to 15 minutes. Now I'm back to 45 minutes although it's not easy yet. When I was having my knee problems I was limping through the gym, and I'm over weight and over 50. I felt like the sad old woman amongst all if the young fit kids. Now I'm still over 50 and somewhat overweight but I'm also strong and determined! Those young, fit/thin people have it easy. They'll be where we are some day. 🙂
It goes up and down, so push through the awkward feelings and keep doing what you need to do.

Hi there!! I recently have started back on my fitness journey. Originally, I was 240 and on the right track. I had a car accident that fractured my pelvis in 5 places, so I couldn't walk for quite a long time. I gained a bunch of weight, but now I am ready to take my life back! Anyone who would like some new friends, just add me!

Fell off the wagon and ate 2 big bowls of crisps (chips) which rather destroyed my deficit. But, to look on the bright side, I didn't pair it with a drink or two which was what I did before Christmas post work and I went and did 2K to finish off my 10K whereas before would have just lay on sofa and probably ate more so two positives there. Small steps to turn bad habits around.

I'm with ya, Becky.  I'm actually enjoying losing weight slowly -- I watch that chart go sloping down ever so gently -- like the beginner's slope at a ski lodge.  Every so often, there's a mogul and my weight goes up a bit but since I stay on track, it seems to go down with no problem.  So I nurse a glass of wine with friends on the weekend and a spoonful or two of dessert and I don't feel deprived or anxious.  Au contraire -- I feel satisfied.  I'm enjoying myself.  I think part of this comes from how good I feel lately -- just more energy, more air in my lungs.  It's all good.

Hurray for us -- for all of us!!!

So happy for you, awood.  Truly, an amazing accomplishment.  God bless you on your birthday and all my prayers for a joyful year -- complete with reaching your UGW.

Best Answer

Hey Hermee,

You're doing the right things after a slip -- like not taking the ride all the way (avoiding the drink or two) and doing your 2K to finish off your 10K.  None of us do this perfectly -- in fact, I'm beginning to realize that trying to do it perfectly was one of my biggest obstacles to losing weight in the past.  So I think you're right to give yourself a couple of snaps.
