Over 40 but still going to do it...

I've gotten out of the habit of my daily exercise and getting ready to hit 45.  I would like some over 40 friends to help keep me motivated but aren't going all out crazy.  Right now just trying to reach my 10k steps a day while working at a desk job all day.

I've made it to the gym 2 days in a row which is big for me right now.  I turned 45 on Tuesday and have been improving on my daily steps.  I was over 8000 yesterday!  How are all of you guys doing?

Best Answer

I made it to the gym on Tuesday but that's it. Terrible. My diet has been poor also.

I'm going to run when I get home from work. I'm shooting for 5 miles.

Got to the gym again last night but didn't eat as well.   Keep on truckin' on! 🙂

Yeah, trying not to be discouraged by every little setback. Didn't get to the gym yesterday, barely made my step count... Just felt like a slug yesterday. And today is all entertaining the kids (aged 5, 5, and 7) while they're out of school (interspersed with my own work-work). I'm going to try to escape for an hour and go to the gym to just try to regain my zen, but dude, I hate feeling like every not perfect day is a HORRIBLE day, you know?

Sending out encouragement for all of us (myself included :)! )

You're at a good age to do it.  That is when weight really started creeping on for me.  I am now 52 and really trying to "take control".  Just a few weeks in with my fitbit and I find it, and the posts, motivating.  Good Luck!

Got outside today and ran 5 miles. Pushed myself for being lazy last week.

Ok I'll Chime in...lol. I am in the over 40 club!(46) I have been working on my lifestyle change journey with my husband since April of 2016. My husband was told he was a diabetic back in Nov of 15 and didn't want to take it seriously until April of 16 when they wanted to start him on medication. So, yes he was started on medication but also decided he wanted to work on his diet and weight, so we decided to do it together. We have both lost over 40 pounds since then, but I am learning with each pound lost it gets harder to lose the next one. BUT we will keep on trying. We are both far from our goal. He will be 50 in April of this year, so I am excited that he will be starting his 50's off a little healthier than the 40's. He has currently gotten his A1C back to normal range and is not only happy with himself, but his doctor is very happy as well.

I work a desk job and I struggle to get my steps in as well. We did really well when the weather was good and we walked outside. We have a treadmill, but don't seem to make our self use it as mach as we made our self walk outside. I really need to get back motivated to get my steps in daily. I have done good today, but that is not my normal..lol.

We have an 8 year old grandson we are raising and he need this as much as we do, so I am hoping to get this lifestyle change to where we can all live a healthier life.

Have you thought about joining some of the other chats here? They are very inspirational. I do the weekly weigh in, as well as which ever challenge is going on at the time. Right now it is Christmas to valentines day, which I am sure will be another after next week when the Valentines Day one is over. (by the way I am still 2.8 pounds from my valentines goal), but we don't all make our goals, but we encourage each other. There are some really great people in there. You should try one out.

Ok I have rattled on long enough, got to get back to work. Hope all have a wonderful Day!

46 here, will be 47 in July. My husband and I are doing this together. Since the beginning of January, I've lost 13 pounds, and he has lost 8. He started one week behind me and he has less to lose overall. We are calorie tracking and walking, and I'm currently also in PT for some back issues. When some of the weight comes down, we will likely do some light running. We used to run 5K every other day 6 days per week. It seems when you fall out of a fitness pattern, sometimes you fall hard.

Anyway, we're both of the mind it is never too late to jump back on the wagon until you're dead. It may be harder than when you were younger, but in some ways I think you appreciate the progress more. I know I took my health and fitness for granted in my 20s and much of my 30s. So by all means, count me in. I don't have a hugely high step goal. I'm happy when I hit 10,000 or go a little over. That may change as fitness increases and difficulty losing weight increases with it, but for now it's working.

I'm going to be 49 in July and also recently started my fitness journey. I've had a few hiccups along the way, but I'm doing my best. I've been having a not-so-good week because I ran out of my multivitamin and that has had a weird effect on me. (Luckily I should have them by the time I get home tonight.)

Like you, I have a desk job, but my Alta is pretty good at reminding me to move. And I ride the bus, so there's walking to and from the stops. Maybe you could set an alarm each hour to go out and walk around the office to stretch your legs. And when you use the restroom, take the long way back (if possible).

Most weekdays, getting to 10K isn't a problem; the weekends are another thing entirely.

After a good start to the week I took Wednesday and Thursday off because my heel was bothering me. Most likely from running on the pavement instead of the treadmill. I had planned to get up this morning and exercise before work but my stupid alarm on my phone wasn't loud enough so I overslept. I'm going to try and run after work today.

It's really smart to listen to foot pain. A friend of mine learned that the
hard way with full blown planar fasciitis, so instead of a few days off, it
turned into months of long, painful recovery. You did the right thing.

So happy to see all those that are here to motivate! I did pretty good Monday but the rest of the week hasn't been so great.  We have had more and more snow and I think I'm getting the winter blues.  Got to break through that.  I'm planning to head to the gym tonight to try to get back on that horse.  Everyone have a great weekend!!

I've been flattened by the flu the last couple of days. More the kids' flu than my own. There's lots of running the sick ones to the doctor and running the healthy ones to school and wherever and making sure all the stuff I usually get done is getting done as well—and getting my paying work done, of course, because the co-pay on the tamiflu for the kids was $100 apiece (!) and the money has to come from somewhere.

I hit a wall yesterday afternoon and now am clearly sick, unsurprisingly. I still have two of them feverish at home today, but my healthy seven-year-old son and my wife (who's doing ten-hour shifts at the hospital this week and hasn't been able to help much) have promised to let me have a bit of a rest this weekend and will take care of things. Let's hope they keep their promise :)!

Anyway, I've gotten no workout done the last two days and haven't worried so much about what I'm eating. I've gained a pound, but I think it's mostly wanting to eat strongly flavored (read: salty) foods because I'm so stuffed up. Hoping that water weight clears out in a few days. Planned myself a lovely low-calorie, low-salt lunch and have light leftovers to feed them all for dinner. Fingers crossed!

I didn't have a great week either. I didn't get much out of my morning workouts and just wasn't up for it today. Maybe when I get home I can try to log some time on the treadmill.

Well my twin grand daughters had their 10th birthday party this weekend, so I had cake and ice cream that I shouldn't have. We went out to dinner Friday night and I didn't do horrible, but sure wasn't the best. I did however meet my step goal each day, so I guess that is a small victory in it all.lol.

I hope all is having a blessed day!

Well, @KerriS, you're smarter than I was.  I waited until last Year - I was 66.

I'm still working Full Time plus a (VERY) Part Time Job.  Desk Jockey in both - Accountant / Full Charge Bookkeeper / Payroll Tax "Consultant".

Before my FitBit, I was Extremely Obese.  Now, I'm "just" Obese.  I didn't walk any more than I had to.  I had no energy.

I get most of my Walking in during my Breaks & Lunch.  Almost always I get in my 10K before I leave.  But at 5'2", that doesn't get me my 5 Miles.  Sometimes I get it before I leave.  Sometimes I don't.  I walk the Aisles at WalMart or one of our 2 Grocery Stores.  I walk in place while watching TV.  I do whatever it takes!  (Most of the Time.  Not always!)  I NEVER manage to meet the Calories Burn Goal.  But I've still lost 42.8 Lbs since 06 June 2016.

It took me a couple of Months to work up to the 10K.  But thanks to the Community, my Friends AND the Challenges, I persevered and I intend to persevere!!!  It's my new LIFESTYLE not just a temporary means to an end!!!
