My new girlfriend is a nutritionist and has been helping me to get a diet and exercise program going for myself. In doing so, we were trying to come up with a goal weight and she said that the ideal/healthy weight for someone of my height (6'1") is 182 LBS.
In high school I weighed in around 185 and I saw myself as nothing but skin and bones (due to very little weight lifting and playing a ton of soccer, basketball and running long distance). I really think its unrealistic to get back down to that weight again, but I'm curious what others think and I wonder if the formulas they use to determine ideal weight for someone with low muscle mass are a bit dated.
Obviously I have no authority on the topic, but it seems to me that 200 pounds would be nearly the perfect weight for me.
Can anyone offer insight on the topic or point me to a place that maybe has some information as to how and why these numbers are where they are?
Thanks!

well not sure what the answer is but I am 6 foot tall and started the year at 204 and a 38 waist size and frankly looked and felt overweight. Set a target for myself of 180 pounds and this morning weighed in at 186 and still need to loose some more because unfortunately at my age of 62 any extra weight is around the middle not in muscle. I think you are on the right track as I was skin and bones in high school also from being 6 feet tall and on the swim team but then I weighed only 160 pounds then. Seems to me somewhere between 185 and 190 would make sense but I am certainly no nutritionist.

There is no one size fits all answer. Just because another person who is 6'1 looks and feels great at 182 pounds doesn't mean you will.
If you think 200 is more reasonable for you, then shoot for 200. When you get there, re-evaluate. Ask yourself if you honestly feel good and if you think you look good at that weight.
Personally, I think it's rediculous that your girlfriend is telling you one exact number is your ideal. Even more so because she's a nutritionist. There's an ideal weight RANGE for a reason. Not everyone is built the same. My girlfriend and I are both 5'3 and she looks and feels awesome at 120 pounds. I look gaunt and sick at that weight and feel much better at 140 just because I have a larger frame than she does.

Thanks for the responses. She realizes there is a "range", and I guess I mispoke because she didn't say it had to be exactly 182, but that it should be right around there. She was also taking into account that I don't really lift weight or build muscle. I do play a little bit of soccer and basketball still, but live a mostly sedentiary (sp?) life style.
I can't imagine being 160 at 6 feet tall. You must have been crazy skinny! Good stuff. Thanks everyone!
