Renpho Scale (is it supposed to be off-balance?)

Hi all. I recently bought the Renpho bluetooth body fat scale https://www.amazon.com/RENPHO-Bluetooth-Body-Fat-Scale/dp/B01N1UX8RW and it arrived two days ago. After I opened the packaging, I noticed that the scale itself is unbalanced when I put it on on kitchen hardwood floor.

There are four paddings on the bottom of the scale, and two corner paddings are smaller than the other two paddings. if you press on the scale with your fingers, it tilts off-balance from corner to corner (where the paddings are smaller).

Is this how it's supposed to be, or did I just get a defective unit?

Turns out that's one of the unique features of the Renpho scale -- it rocks back and forth so that you can weight yourself and improve your balance at the same time.

Several problems (primarily about connectivity) with Renpho scales have been reported earlier:

It’s probably a case of what you pay is what you get. A scale should be level on a plane surface IMO.

I have a RENPHO scale - It should be stable (mine is).  I find that the scale is pretty accurate as it varied only 0.2 pounds from my Dr. office and gave the same weight as the scale at the YMCA where I work out.  You need to have the RenPho app running to collect the body composition data and to log weight into the FitBit app.

I don't have that scale, but often the food pads on scales can be turned clockwise or opposite to adjust for surface imperfections.

If that doesn't help try going through all the answered questions on Amazon.  Hope you enjoy it. From what I read you can sync your daily weigh-ins through their app to your fitbit account which is pretty cool.

Except that based on what @Daves_Not_Here has reported in the past (e.g. here), this may not always work flawlessly in practice...

If it worked flawlessly in practice it wouldn't be any fun 🙂

The charming thing about cats is they'll do whatever you want when they feel like it.  I'm thinking Renpho would make a great cat name.

No it shouldn't.  It should be level.  Mine is and when you step on it, it is very stable even just 1 foot on it.  I think yours is probably defective.  Did you buy it from Amazon?  If so, you should get a RMA.  It happens.  Quality of the scale is surprisingly good and amazing for the price I paid for it.  The customer service from Renpho is quite good, so you should ask them if it's normal.

Well, that is one person's opinion and not a fact.  I own a Renpho scale myself, but I use it with an iPhone.  There is no battery drain with my Renpho app and I have it active all the time.  It syncs immediately and it also is smart enough to tell the difference between my weight and my partner's weight who decided to be curious enough to try my scale out herself.  It even tells me the new weight and if I want to assign it to a different user.  Pairing is easy; no code necessary unlike the Aria 2 where you need a special WIFI router in order to work.  Aria 2 won't work with my provider's WIFI router btw.

So far I've used it, it syncs quickly with my iPhone running iOS 11.4.1 with location on, Health Watch, Autosleep, Fitbit app and Renpho all running together.  Again, no super drain on my phone.  I think the bad experience is attributed to specific Android phones.

Also, they did warn people to switch out the included batteries immediately with better batteries (I use Energizers) so the scale will work properly after the initial calibration and setup and syncing.  I had problems with the original batteries -- I mean they're just cheap.

So far, it's helping me track my weight loss, not my wallet's.  The scale's accuracy is very close to the nursing scale we use in care homes and hospitals.  I work in the nursing profession so I was surprised to see a scale this cheap is accurate to a more professional doctor's scale. 🙂

Has anybody ever thought what the values tell us?

  1. Body Weight, BMI, Body Fat, Fat free Body Weight ….. all clear
  2. Body Water and Skeletal Muscle are given in percentage values …… percentage of which base value?
  3. what does the value “Muscle Mass” consist of ….. only tissue or water too? Since Fat free Body Weight consists of Muscle Mass and Bone Mass …… where does Body Water come in?

To explain the query with a real example – in my case (I am a normal mortal, not an athlete) the Rephno App reports:

  • Fat free Body Weight: 58.6kg
  • Muscle Mass: 55.7kg
  • Bone Mass: 2.9kg
  • Body Water: 59.4%

Is Body Water included in Muscle Mass, i.e. Muscle Mass 59.4% Water and 41.6% Tissue ??? How else would the numbers tally?

Appreciate any thoughts that shed light on the meaning of the numbers
