Stationary Bike - should I take off wrist-band?

If I am on the stationary bike for, say, 30 minutes and go 8 miles and I want to log that 30 minute work out for ~500 calories burned, should I take off my wrist-band during that work out so that it doesn't count arbitrary step count I rack up in those 30 minutes? I ask because I don't want my calorie burn count to to be overestimated due to these possibly arbitrary steps...

As soon as you manually log that workout based on a more accurate calorie burn than Fitbit could give you - it replaces the calories that Fitbit came up with.

 

So steps don't matter at that point in the scheme of calories.

 

Now if this is Charge HR or Surge - calories was based on HR anyway, not steps, during the workout - so no need to even mess with it.

 

Either case - start your activity tracker so you have a record to look at later - that will give you the start and duration times to use on your manually logged workout if you need one.

For me the question of tracking activity, exercise or whatever, is to enter manually or not to measure manually. 

 

Take a day like today.  I worked on an elliptical trainer for 50 minutes, then lifted weights for 60 minutes, then I stretched for 10 minutes. 

 

1) Do I turn on the activity tracker at the start of exercise in general and off after the stretching?

 

2) What are activity minutes?  How come my Charge adds minutes after I have turned off the stop whatch feature? 

 

3) What is the difference between activity and exercise?  Is exercise logged manually subtracted from activity? 

 

4) What is the difference between steps counted with the activity timer on, and the activity timer off?

1 - I'd suggest doing it for each different workout, but stop before stretching, which isn't burning anything that elevated HR is going to be accurate with anyway.

Because if this is Charge HR, you can leave the elliptical alone. But you'll want the start and duration for lifting to manually log that.

If this is step based Charge non-HR, you'll want to manually log both of those as their own workout - and they burn different amounts.

Since you are replacing the calorie count with whatever the database has - you can delete the activity records after you have manually made your workout records.

 

2 - Activite minutes is when it estimates you are burning 3 x your resting metabolism rate. So that could be taking some stairs - walking faster, stuff besides workouts even. And of course if HR is still elevated after the workout despite hitting the button, you are still burning enough to be 3 x resting, so you get Active Minutes.

 

3 - No answer to this since the question doesn't make sense with what those things mean. But now that you know, no math is done between them.

 

4 - None. If Charge HR it turns on per second HR logging instead of normal 5 sec logging, and if HR is high enough with those steps - calorie burn is based on HR not steps.
