Weight Gain/gram of protein

My mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. The doctors have asked her to gain weight before treatments begin because she is currently 106 pounds. We just brought her a FitBit Versa to help her track her daily progress including her grams of protein. Unfortunately it says that the app doesn't support weight gain. Is there a way around this? Also is there a way to see the grams of protein and not the percentage? Thank you for your help with this.

Hi @Goggles101 - you have a number of options.

  • The web Dashboard application indicates grams of macronutrients, including protein.
  • The Android and iOS apps indicate percentage of calories.  If you want to do some math, you can calculate grams of protein using the following formula: (Total Calories X Protein Percentage / 4 Calories per Gram of Protein)
  • You can set a Food Plan to maintain weight and then eat over those calories - 500 excess calories per day will yield a 1 pound gain per week.
  • MyFitnessPal links to Fitbit and may be a better fit for what you are trying to accomplish.

@Goggles101 -- here is a article for setting a weight goal.  You can set a weight gain goal.  The article explains how to set that up using an app or the fitbit.com dashboard.

I've linked MyFitnessPal to my fitbit account and use that to track what I eat.  You can definitely track grams of protein there.  I do.

Because she is actively trying to gain weight, she should monitor progress by weighing in daily.  Keep an eye in fitbit's weekly averages in the app -- that tends to be a better measure of true gain/loss than whatever the daily difference turns out to be since fluid retention varies a lot from day to day and throughout the day.
