Hi
Start by signing up to myfitnesspal (if you haven't already), then link it to fitbit (use the 'app' dropdown).
MFP will prompt you re weight loss goal, activity etc.
Start there...you will tweak/adjust as you go. Good luck ! 🙂 Rob
PS I had/have a lot of weight to lose and cut my carbs to about half or less of 'suggested'..has been working!

Hi and welcome to the community!
Myfitnesspal is a good tool to use, but I would add something to OCDOC's post--
Myfitnesspal is going to calculate how many calories you should be eating based on your age, height, weight, gender, and activity level. Make sure all the info you put in for that is accurate. It will spit out a number for you as far as calories, but the values that it gives for your carbs, fats, and protein are the same basic percentages that it gives to everyone. So it's a good tool, yes, but not one that's specifically designed for you.
I would say that if you want to lose weight safely and properly, you should spend one week tracking your "normal" eating on myfitnesspal. That means ignoring the amount of calories it wants you to eat and just eating what you normally would before you started losing weight. You might find that you're eating significantly more than the given calorie value each day, or maybe you only overeat some days and you undereat other days. You might even be consistently undereating. From there, you can decide how many calories you should be eating.
If you're consistently overeating, take the average of your caloric intake for those seven days, and subtract 500. This may still be over the amount of calories mfp wants you to eat, but if you suddenly drop 2000 calories out of your daily diet, you're going to be hungry and miserable and you're eventually going to end up overeating or just plain quitting. As you get used to the 500 calorie drop, you can drop 500 more calories until you're at the value mfp wants you to eat.
If you're eating sporadically-- undereating some days and overeating some days-- or undereating consistently, your situation is a bit different. Basically, it means you're not losing weight because your metabolism is out of whack and you need to fix it before you can lose weight. If you notice either of these eating patterns, set your loss goal to "maintenance" in the mfp settings. This will increase your calorie budget for the day. Then eat as close to that value each day as possible, even if it feels like you're overeating. At this point, you should be increasing your activity level a bit to mitigate weight gain and help your metabolism recover.
As far as how many times a day you want to eat, that's personal preference. Eat when you're hungry, stop when you're satisfied but not full, being mindful of your calories. Some people on here like to fast intermittently, so they only eat like twice a day, but they still consume an appropriate amout of calories. Other people like five small meals a day. Take your pick.
How many carbs you eat is going to depend on your activity level. If you're sedentary, you should be reducing carbs because you're not using them during exercise and they're being stored as fat. If you exercise regularly, a moderate amount of carbs is good (about 35% of your daily calories). If you're working out super hard, especially during cardio, you're going to need more carbs to fuel your workouts (up to 50% of your calories).
Hope this helps, and good luck!
