Workout routines for plus size/obese women.

Hello all!

I am a 23 year old female who needs some help. A really good friend of mine got me a flex a couple months ago as a gift towards a better health. First off, I need to put this out there. I absolutely love the flex. It literally has been a life saver for me! In 4.5 months, I have lost 59 lbs! Yes, you read that right. But, after a recient breakup with a guy I was with for almost 2 years,  I'm kind of stuck now. See, before my relationship ended, I was working out with his dad on a boflex machine and walking/hiking and following what his dad was saying. I was also borrowing his mom's zumba DVDs. As you can guess, I don't workout with his dad anymore and I had tto give back the zumba DVDs. I have almost no money after bills to get the zumba DVDs myself, at this time.

My friend (who gave me the flex) is letting me borrow some dumbells (in the range of 15-20lbs). I was wondering if any of you could give me some routines to try! I'm walking right now, counting calories, and eating healthy. I want to lose another 100 lbs or so. What are some good routines for a plus size/obese woman?

And I am totally open to anyone who has any healthy meal ideas! So, please! Talk amongst yourselves!

Thank you all in advance for taking the time to respond and helping me out. 🙂

I hope everyone has a great day!

Hi Myndijean, Good for you that you are well on your way to being much healthier! You can do this! I learned something very important many years ago when I was devasted by a breakup.  Don't let anyone be your universe. For me it was my boyfriend.  For others it's a job or their children that is what they get their value from.  For me I discovered that all those things can be taken away, but a relationship with my Lord Jesus, took me out of the pit, healed me and helped me grow and be a stronger person.  A great read is Beth Moore, Get out of that Pit. I couldn't read it fast enough.  No one can take His relationship away from you. Meanwhile, keep moving and look UP.  I found myself looking down too much. Ask Him for help.  He's waiting to hear from you! He wants what's best for you and part of that is taking care of yourself.....You are so worth it!

That is fantastic weight loss!! Congratulations! I had over 80 pounds to lose, and I've lost 35. I just walk, walk, walk the dog. I don't know what city or country you in, but maybe there are community exercise groups where you live. There are also tons of exercise videos including zumba, on youtube. Your local library probably has dvds to borrow too. It sounds like it was really working for you to exercise with your ex's dad. Maybe you could pair up with another friend nearby to help each other. Years ago I asked a neighbor if she wanted to walk with me in the early morning, and we became best friends. Good luck:)

I have a set of zumba dvd's I'm not using. If we can figure out how to exchange addresses I will mail them to you. Up to you, but they are yours if you want them.

Body-weight resistance exercises are free... pushups (girlies if you can't manage the full pushup, or hold a plank position for as long as you can if girlies are not yet within your range.   Wall pushups are also a good place to start... start where you are!).  Squats, or just hold a horse stance if you're not yet up to squats (google the horse training stance from martial arts).   Lunges, or hold a yoga warrior pose.

Crunches, leg-lifts, curl with cans of soup, or books.  Or cats.  Whatever works.

Marching with high knees.

Lots of free videos on youtube.

Walk, walk, walk.

When my daughter was little, I would put on Dan Zanes CD's and dance like a fool "All Around the Kitchen" (@9yo, she rolls her eyes now when I do it!)

You can do it!

For indoor, I love the leslie sansone walking Ideas (look on YouTube). For outdoors, I just started couch2 5k and love that too.

I started at 300+ pounds and it was hard to start working out, so walking was my first step. A year later and 90 pounds lighter I still get benefit from walking, since it's what I enjoy doing the most. The trick is to do incline walking. A fast walk on a high enough incline burns as many calories as an average run without busting your knees with all the weight. I just plug in an audio book, and lose myself in a whole new world for an hour of 3.5 mph brisk walk at 15% incline for over a thousand calories burned per hour!

I'm in the same boat financially (I've been out of work for quite some time) and physically.  I have a good 85-90 lbs to lose myself. Until I can find a job I use the library.  With my library card I can go online and search for all kinds of things (book, dvd's cd's etc.) that are available within my "network"  When I find something I like I put it on hold and when it becomes available to borrow I get an email.  Until recently I never thought to borrow work out dvds. But its been great. I've been using the Leslie Sasone Walk dvd's and since I only get to borrow them for a week I know that every week I'm going to be doing  a different workout so I don't get bored.  I'm sure you could borrow Zumba dvd's.

I hope this has been helpful and not confusing.

Libraries are one of my favorite places, now have started to use the
elibrary which saves on gas. Don't know if any such resources offer videos
also.
Much success on your weigh loss journey!

I second the searching for videos on YouTube. Just the other day I found a dance workout there that I like. Good luck!

Congrats on doing so well!

I was just over 300, and now I have lost 50lbs  walking lots (big, long walks for 1-2 hours as fast as I can), using YouTube videos (check out fitness blender... They have ton of really good videos that are low impact and range from easy to tricky), swimming, and aqua aerobics. If you have access to a pool, I really recommend swimming and aqua. Both are great cardio, and toning, but also no impact so it's easier if you are heavier. Otherwise check out Pinterest for some exercise ideas too as there are lots of good suggestions there that you might like. Good luck... And know that you got this! 🙂

I know this is an old post but I wanted to chime in too!  I'm a bigger than average gal and working my arse off (literally)!  Kudos to you for doing so well!  If you're still looking for motivation/ideas/whatever, I'd love to chat!  Right now, I am doing high intensity interval training cardio at the gym 5 days a week, weights 3-4 days a week, counting calories, and yoga!  I feel so much stronger, which is a HUGE motivation!

That is an epic weight loss @myndijean! I know that you think you have a long way to go but look how much you've accomplished!

I know that breakups are a complete bummer and you get stuck, but what I recommend (what I did) is gather up a bunch of friends and go out walking or hiking to a new place, I'm sure that  getting out and knowing new places and people will help physically and give you peace to move on.

Stay strong! You can do it Heart
