cant lose weight

Im 19 years old and this past year I gained the freshman 15 mainly from unhealthy eating on campus and drinking. Also I was consistent with the gym. Anyways since May I have been trying to lose weight and I probably lost about 5 pounds but can seem to move from 181 (im 5'8) for more than a month. I just got my fit bit about a week ago and have been logging around12,000 steps a day. I also do eliptical at least 30 mins 5 days a week. I eat healthy food (about 1300 calories a day). I eat turkey burgers (no bun), baked chicken, ham, wheat breads, granola, eggs, apples, grapefruit, pita chips, homemade guacomole, grapes, etc. I dont know what Im doing wrong because I also drink TONS of water and have just started going to yoga twice a week.

 Please help!

When I had a lot of weight to lose (I am 5'3" and weighed 200 pounds at one time) I lost it quickly, eating 1700-1800 calories a day, because I was burning a lot, even though I wasn't putting in nearly as much time exercising as you are.  Now, at 130 pounds, I find that it's MUCH slower.  If I'm lucky, eating 1200-1300 calories a day, I can lose 2-3 pounds a month.  Maybe.  That last 5 pounds is going to take forever.

So, what I'm saying is keep doing what you're doing.  Be patient and keep working at it.  Don't think of it as a diet, but as a lifestyle change, and just go for being healthy, not just losing weight.

With only 15 to lose, I hope you selected a reasonable weight loss amount.

Which at this point would be 1/2 lb weekly.

Otherwise you are just creating too much stress for your body, it'll adapt, and that's about all you get anyway.

But if it's a wise purposeful choice you get to eat more and still lose that.

But if the body forces it on you because of unwise choice, it's just extra stess the body is under - not good for fat loss.

Because unless you are logging that elliptical separately, it's badly underesimated calorie burn by Fitbit, which can't see all the steps, and the steps aren't walking anyway for estimating calorie burn.

I'll just make a list of what I do when I used to run and needed to get into my racing form.

-get enough sleep (I know, as a Uni student, this can be hard! Cat nap if you have to! Sleep deprivation will also lead you to feeling freezing cold, which can make it even harder to want to do anything)

-take a good multi vitamin. Nutrient deficiencies can impact metabolism

-do not go too long without eating (ie. do not ignore your hunger)

-at the same time, do not eat unless you are legitimately hungry. Some people just eat because it is 'breakfast.' I generally just eat when I am quite hungry

-try to limit beverages to plain water and herbal tea without milk/ sugar/ creamer. People often underestimate calories in liquids

-for snacks, make lower cal treats like air popped popcorn or hand made fruit juice popsicles.

-eat a little protein and fat with every meal. This helps delay gastric emptying

-be really careful calculating calories. It is VERY easy to underestimate how much you eat. Even more so if you snack on little bits throughout the day. Try going a week or two without snacking. See if this helps

-add caijin pepper to your food. It is a thermogenic, as is green tea

-try to ignore your weight. Don't obsess over it. Yes, weigh in once a week or so to keep yourself on track, but don't beat yourself up if you aren't losing fast enough. Just wear comfortable clothes that you like, eat what you like - but in healthy format (ie. burgers, or shakes or anything else can usually be made quite healthy by substituting certain ingredients!)

-take probiotics too. Many people have GI gut disorders. Helping your digestive system sometimes help with proper elimination of toxins and waste, and will help you feel slimmer much sooner

-also try cutting out major allergens/ foods that people often are sensitive to...bread, milk, cheese etc. can cause a lot of bloating in some people. I find I don't digest grains well, in general, and basically don't eat wheat (I will eat rice pasta or corn sometimes, especially if I am running long distances, but generally, I don't eat a lot of grains. I get my calories from additional sources - healthy fats like avocados, berries, nuts, seeds, legumes etc.)

-cut out foods that you feel could be causing bloat. Fizzy soft drinks cause some people to feel bloated. Excessive salt (you need some salt, but try to get himalayan sea salt instead).

-if you are increasing fruits and veggies, watch fiber intake. Insoluble fiber can be really rough on the GI tract, especially if you aren't used to consuming a lot of fiber. If you've never gotten a lot of fiber, slowly add fiber to your diet. Your stomach and GI tract may go a little haywire if you increase it very quickly

-or look for foods high in soluble fiber, which is generally gentler on the stomach and intenstines. For example, oatmeal is high in soluble fiber. But wheat bran is high in insoluble fiber. It's like putting a bristle brush through your bowels. Some people are fine...other people find their stomachs puff right up.

-I did mention probiotics, right? 🙂

Most of all, slow and steady and be happy with every step closer to your goals! 🙂

At the beginning of my weightloss a couple of years ago I was doing everything right but not losing weight either, I asked about it at my gym and they told me that as my body was getting used to changes I might not lose the weight straight away but to keep going and it would start coming off. After a month of eating right and going to the gym the weight FINALLY started to come off, and it was coming off quite fast too, I didn't change anything to start the weightloss, so maybe just keep at it and wait it out if you think you're doing things right 🙂
