cholesterol and weight loss

So im down about 8 pounds now for the year and my muscle mass is up about 0.5%  So Id call that a win (Im 6-2" and 170).  Up until I turned 40 I could eat whatever I wanted but its been starting to catch up with me now so I thought fit bit would help me get more active, gain muscle etc.  Just went for a physical and my Cholesterol is up 30 points (still in an ok range) but I think overall im eating better than last year just not much fruit.  My breakfast is typically egg whites, a protein shake and some turkey,  sometimes I have a mid morning snack, lunch is various but lower on carbs, sometimes ill have an afternoon snack of nuts and then evening meal (trying to have carbs around 40% of my diet and protein around 30%).   I ate way worse last year (from a fat and meat standpoint) probably ate slightly more fruit than this year but I know last year I also typically ate 1-3 whole eggs every morning so why is my cholesterol so high now and what can I do to still be low carb and eat more fruit?

Ah, double posting to keep us all honest ;-).

So in my response in this thread I suggested measurement variation in the test might be part of the answer.  It is also worth pointing out that your cholesterol tends to go up as your age, which is the one variable (others being weight, exercise, and diet) that you don’t want to change!

Well there wasn’t a form about cholesterol and weight loss and I figured
that only a limited number of people would be able to see my question
within he other thread. Any info on diet related to cholesterol is
appreciated.

@DJWolfpack,

First some hard information. Doctors tell their victims a 200 total cholesterol is normal.  Forty percent of American males will die of heart disease. Virtually all of them will have a total cholesterol above one fifty. The death rate is the same between 150 and 200 as it is between 200 and 250.

Your diet is giving you heart disease and possibly cancer. See, cancer is also related to cholesterol and fat.

There is only one way of eating that has been scientifically proven to prevent, arrest and reverse heart disease and many types of cancer. That's the whole food, plant based diet.

I suggest watching Forks over Knives on Netflix.

There is no healthy reason to be low carb. The best health is obtained by about 80% carbs, 10% fats and 10% protein. This is what's in the only diet proven to prevent, arrest or cure heart attacks, cancer and most of the other 15 main causes of death.

I was just giving you a hard time.  😉  Starting a thread for this topic actually makes more sense than posting in the skinny/fat thread.  There is a ton of information on diet and cholesterol.  Unfortunately, much of it is conflicting as the skeptical cardiologist points out in many of his posts.

If you are an old school believer that saturated fat is bad, you'll probably feel good about being a low fat diet after reading the recent report from American Heart Association discussed in this article in the NYT last Sunday (there is a link to the AHA article so you can read it yourself).  I'm still not convinced they've got it right, though.

HAHA! ok thanks. I think if I increase my fruit intake from nearly zero
to maybe a small amount each day and try to favor the chicken, turkey and
fish over beef and pork (but not eliminate beef and pork) that my numbers
will be ok in the future. my blood pressure was excellent. I wish there
was an easier way to check for cholesterol...

my cholesterol went bonkers around 40 too. I was very over weight, completely sedentary and ate like crap. Changed all that and now at almost 50- all is well. I don't know that fruit is the answer to the riddle although I do eat a lot of it, but I do think nutrition and a colored variety of veggies and fruits can help. Lean protein is great. I would try to limit beef because it is really fatty and go with chicken, pork, fish and egg whites as you mentioned. I never ever wouldn't even dream of it give up carbs, but everyone has strong opinions about them so you will have to figure that part of the riddle for yourself...I will say I do not eat pasta, very little rice and I try to stay away from super sugary things..but bread and biscotti and popcorn - not a day goes by that I don't indulge...
