looking for friends - 50s and female and getting fabulous!

Hi!  I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support.  I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs.  My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.

Anyone?

Good for you Mudpuppy!  Congratulations on your milestones!  With that attitude I'm sure you'll hit your mark in no time.

You made an excellent point, in that part of the reason we don't enjoy maintenence of any weight loss for very long, is that we are short sighted and see the 'final' number (on the scale) as the 'end' game.  Nutrition and exercise should be life long habits we pick up and KEEP; and we can only do that if we learn things along the way on whatever our journey happens to be.

So always celebrate and incorporate the lessons learned as well as the declining numbers you see on the scale.  This is truly a journey, not a task to be done, then forgotten.  Best health to you, Mudpuppy and all here trying to better themselves!

Yes! I did not read much past your post....I am struggling to lose weight. I can easily get the 10K steps in a day, but I need to over haul my diet. My will power is non existent right now, I have had quite a bit of stress over the last few years and developed some bad habits. Really getting frustrated with myself! What does everyone do to combat night time eating??

Hi lifesAdaisy. I combat night time eating by brushing my teeth early.

I have a treadmill so I am able to get on the treadmill for at least a brisk 15 minute walk,  99% of the time I get off the treadmill  and the craving is gone.   If that doesn't work I will have low sugar fruit like raspberries or a piece of lowfat cheese like the Babybel brand with a cup of hot tea or big glass of water.  I also make sure that I log the food in my food journal.   For me if I were to choose a snack that is high sugar it just sets me up for the next craving and then I have the raging munchies.   I generally do not eat anything after 8:00 PM.

LifesADaisy - I combat snacking by working on paper rafts (scrapbook, cards). My SIL knits & crotchets. Hands are busy & you don't want to get crumbs, grease etc on your hobby

Hello Everyone.

Great ideas for hitting the 10K ! I am 56, I have lost 25 pounds and want to lose another 30. I find it fairly easy to hit 10,000 steps on the week-end but not Monday - Friday. I don't have a treadmill at home.I start a few days with bootcamp, so I get strength training and some cardio, but not enough steps.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the great conversation.Kathleen

Hi, I am 50 and in the need to lose 50 lbs.  I have had an A1C of 6.2 for the last couple of years and have said I will eat right and excercise, but it never seems to happen.  I have recently had labs done and I have to make a follow up appointment to see what is in store for me.  I am a nurse and I deal with people with disease everyday, and that is not what I want for myself.  It is not easy to change bad eating habits, especially when I am a stress eater and my  husband does not feel being healthy and fit is important.    I bought a fit bit a couple of months ago and I have used it on and off, but starting Octobor 1st my goal is try to hit 10,000 steps a day, I have been doing fairly well.  I do not want to fall off track and forgot my goal of losing 50 pounds.

We have a few things in common, I want to lose 60 lbs, and my husband had diabetes too, and he doesn't care about heathly eating or being fit either.  I am not a nurse, but I too am a stress eater, so some days I cheat more than others.  I have changed my eating habits over a year ago, and have lost 20 lbs so far.  I just try to take it one day at a time.  You need to find an exercise routine that you enjoy doing and don't mind taking the time out of your day.  I go to the gym at work 3-4 times a week for 30 mins and I try to get up early on the weekends and go for a 30 min walk before starting my day.  I find if you eat almonds or some kind of nut when your a bit hungry it fills you and helps take the cravings away.   good luck.

I want to encourage you in your goal for 10k steps a day.  In June when I started using the Fitbit my A1C was 9.9 and I weighed 50 LBS more than I do today.  When I began to eat healthy my daily blood sugar readings went down pretty quickly but I still saw dramatic swings in my readings.  After a couple of weeks of getting daily 10k steps I saw a further reduction in my blood sugar average and readings where the dramatic swings were gone.  When I went to the doctor in September my A1C was 5.4 and I was able to discontinue 2 of the 3 diabetes medications I was on.   I just turned 56 so it is never too late to take care of yourself.   Hang in there,  the healthier food choices and getting your steps are going to make you feel so much better.   You are worth it!

My dentist just recommended I purchase a water pic for receeding gums.  I was told to use half mouthwash and half warm water.  But I pour 1-2 cap fulls of mouthwash into the water filled reservoir.  I discovered that once I use this I no longer have a desire to eat.  Apparently, not cleaning the inside of the mouth after eating is an encouragement to eat more.  Duh!!!  I also found that I can curb my appetite by putting several drops of Slim & Sassy essential oil from doTerra in Orem, Utah to be extremely helpful also.  I will carry a 1 liter bottle of water to work with about 4 drops of Slim & Sassy and I am not hungry if I sip the water all day long.  Hope this helps.

Hi Jagallen.  I am completely new to this.  I bought my fitbit flex on Oct 4th.  I doing the best I can with it and am very happy with the unit.  I am often amazed by the number of steps I took during the day.  I find that I am pretty good at recording the food intake until I eat something at work.  I work a the city jail and have absolutely no idea of the calorie content so have to wing that.  Until I started using the fitbit I found I didn't sleep well at night.  Since, however, I have been finding that I am better rested.  I don't understand why but hey, why knock a good thing.  Regarding how to join a group.  I figure that you just post something and respond when you receive an alert.  I would be willing to exchange emails  and communicate with you on this adventure if you like.
