looking for friends - 50s and female and getting fabulous!

Hi!  I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support.  I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs.  My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.

Anyone?

I like your no excuse attitude. We will root for you. Notice how many step you take now and every couple days add another 100 or so. You can do this.

Greens are great for the immune system as are probiotics. Garlic, onions and mushrooms also are good for immunity. Heard that on DrFuhrman.com PBS show.

Hope that you heal well.

I just noticed this group. So, Hi to everyone.  60 years young. I got my fitbit charge HR in April and have been "hittin it" ever since. I am surprised between the fitbit and my smart phone,  I continue to stay accountable. I have lost 25 lbs in 2 months.  I eat between 1200-1500 cal per day. With one day off for rest and eating what I want within reason. I crossfit, weightlift, and interval training 6 days a week. This last week, I have been feeling like I'm not bouncing back from the workouts.  Anybody else have ideas about recovery times?

I have found some of my weeks I do not feel like I have repaired my muscles from weight lifting, so if i feel that way I take a week of weightlifting off and let my body rest from that. I am still getting my steps in within that time, but just not doing the weights. I only lift three days a week so taking off a week is not like 7 days off, but I have found when I feel that way and do that I am much better. Recovery time is defiantly not as quick as it was when i was lifting in my 20's and 30's, but I also have increased protein and take amino acids as well, which are supposed to help with the repair of tearing that occurs with weightlifting. Hope that helps.

thanks for the input on recovery.  In 3 1/2 weeks, I'm headed for Italy and will lay off the weights and focus on hiking and walking.  On another subject, does anybody drink smoothies in their daily intake?

I have weight watchers smoothies. I mix the packets into my Non- fat Greek yogurt for a super- charged protein breakfast or lunch. If it's too thick, I thin it out with a smidge of decaf coffee. I also do smoothies for a nighttime treat.

Hi, I am 55 today and I would like to lose 25 lbs.  I work out 3 or 4 nights a week.  I did high intensity interval training.  I really watch what I eat.  I usually have 1 or 2 protein smoothies a day which consists of 3 cups spinach, 1/3 bananna, 1/3 cups berries, 1 scoop of low carb protein and water.  I have given up all soda and rarely eat carbs.  I can't seem to lose anything.   I do take a med that does cause weight gain and I can't switch it, but it is at a very low dosage.  Do you have any ideas? Thanks

I would change out the banana and berries in your smoothie for fruit with lower sugar content. I use an apple in mine with the spinach and whey protien.

Do you track your intake?  I use My Fitness Pal and track everything I eat. This helps me to maintain a consistant level of protien, carbs and fats.

Are you drinking enough water [does not include coffee or tea] you should drink half your body weight. Example if you are 230 pounds dring 115 ounces of water a day.

I eat every 2-3 hours and having a carb and protien each time.

Lishash, how long have you been cutting back and about how many calories do you eat a day? I am 60 and I found my body takes a week or two to get my metabolism running well and start consistently losing weight. Even at that, the more I lose, the more my BMR decreases.  So I need to be ok with losing weight more slowly as I continue this saga.

Hey Before 60

I'm in South Texas and it's hot here too!!! Probably hotter than your Florida. But us South Texans have become used to the heat. If it get's too cool here, we start to worry about Global Warming. Today, I was out doing home visits as part of my job. I drove for 8 hours and it was hot when I stepped outside the car. In a moment, I am going to go bike riding and it is 91 degrees.  We Texans and Floridians can  run around in this heat,  but people up North pass out in 90 degree heat. That's cool for us in July and August.

Sounds like you are doing the right stuff, maybe watching what you eat is not accurate enough. Do you log what you eat? Maybe try that and see if it helps. I take meds as well for bp and cholesterol and acid reflux and am able to lose, so not sure about the med. Have you also changed up your routine? Mix low intensity every so often, or try something different. Hope something helps. Joanie25

Good Morning, I've just completed almost 5 mile walk with my dog. I have a fitbit flex, which I really like.

But like so many others needing encouragement and support. Listening eyes. I need to lose at least 30 pounds.

At a frustrating point. I've made so many changes to my diet and yet no results on the scale, actually the results are going the wrong way. Since I have my fitbit, I've gained 4 pounds, It doesn't feel like muscle and the mental struggle is worse.

I used to have at least one to multiple candy bars, lots of bread on a daily basis. Now I have maybe one or two candy bars a week. 0-2 slices of bread in a day. I don't keep chips, candy, or bad snacks to have in the house to tempt me. I may have one can of regular soda a week and I dont' drink diet soda or juice, usually just water, sometimes tea or flavored water.

Anyone have suggestions? I'm not diabetic. But have high bp, so need to try and get it under better control.

Not sure how long you have been exercising, but you did a 5 mile walk so maybe a couple of weeks? If it is a short period sometimes, it takes a bit for weight loss to start. I know I was doing 60 minutes of weights for 10-12 weeks and had not seen any weight loss. When I changed my eating habits it finally kicked into gear, but I made a couple of changes that really seemed to matter. From what I have seen on these pages, finding the right fit for yourself is actually the best, with that in mind you will probably get a few different replies and maybe alter what you are eating to live with something that works for you. I have decreased carbs and increased protein intake as well as vegetable intake and reduced processed foods as much as possible. Don't eat bread, potatoes or pasta, except once in a while. Most of the time I drink water with slices of cucumber in it for a light taste and brewed tea without sweetener. I do weight lifting three times a week (different body parts) for an hour at a time and also try to get my 10,000 steps in at least 5 days a week. I do not live anywhere near a gym or club so all of my stuff is done at home. Hope you can find what works best for you. Good luck.

Are you keeping a food journal? If not, start - it's great to go back and look at what you're actually consuming. Measure your food too until you get to know what things should look like.

Add more movement into your life - make it become part of who you are - start w/small things, parking further away  - one thing I use to do but no longer is I would park a block away from my house and then walk home. That meat I'd have to walk back to my car to go anywhere - I kept parking further and further away until I was walking 8+ miles at one time.

Make sure you're drinking enough water - aim for 8 8 ounce glasses a day or if you weigh 200 pounds aim for 100 ounces.

Are you eating enough? You have to eat to lose weight. I eat multiple times a day until dinner and then I'm done for the day. I sometimes still struggle w/dinner - example tonight - I'm going to yoga at 6:30pm so that means I'll eat dinner after 8pm.

Make sure you're eating breakfast.

Good luck!!

Hi Cookie Baker, A lot of us are having the same trouble. I lose one pound and then plataeu for 3 weeks. But just as a comparison, I haven't had a candy bar in years, I don't eat pizza any more, I had a sandwich on the weekend but that is the last time I've had bread in a long time. I eat a mixture of oat meal and MaltOmeal with 2 T of rasins and 1/2 t of ground fenil seed added. I snack on 4 Adriac figs and 12 dry roasted almonds, 10 baby carrots and 2T of dried cranberries during the day. Lunch I have 3 inches of a burrito (1/2 a burrito, and 1 cup mixed vegies No sauce). Afternoon I have 1 whole fruit, today is an apple. Dinner I have a fish patty, salad, or a 1/2 a squash or stew.  My down fall is 1/2 cup frozen fruit with 1/2 cup sugar free vanilla ice cream (90 cals) Life isn't worth living without ice cream.

I gave up soda pop, and most sugars. The only bad part about sugars and diet sweetners is that they make your brain crave more. So try and get off of all that. No sweetners in the tea or coffee.

Also, I'm not a small person, I'm 6 foot tall. I still need to lose 20 more pounds and I'm hoping it is off by this time next year.

So keep working on it. It's hard, no one said anything worth doing was easy! You will get there.
