looking for friends - 50s and female and getting fabulous!

Hi!  I'm looking for some friends for motivation and support.  I'm 51, female, and working on losing 30 lbs.  My A1c is pre-diabetic so I'm shedding some weight to try and get it under control.

Anyone?

Peachhead,

Do you have your stride distance input correctly? Because I have easily hit 10,000 steps on days when I've never left the house. If your stride is listed as, say, 3 feet, but it's actually 1.5 feet, then you're under-cutting your steps by half.

Hello,

I am a 55 yr old woman from Massachusetts.  I've had my Fitbit since March 19th.  I hit the ground running-well almost!  Walking...walking and more walking.  I've been a life long dieter; so that said, I took all the information I knew  about healthy eating and made a vow to myself to only put food in my mouth that had some benefit to my body and to control the poRtions and thusly calorie intake.  I have strayed from the food plan (insignificantly) a time or two, but for the most part, following that, keeping my calories in the 1500- 1800 range, and walking an average of 15,000 steps a day ( only 3 days since March have I not made at least 10,000) I have lost 34 pounds!  I have another 10-20 to my own goal, but the doctor was so impressed last week with the scale number, but more importantly the numbers on my blood work- he said, to keep doing what I am doing.

I am inspired to continue by so many things- my husbands smile when he looks at me when he doesn't know I am watching him, the remarks from peers, family and co-workers, the way it feels to bend over, walk up stairs, to automatically finding myself seeking the parking spot furthest from the door, to watching my elderly mother suffering from the effects of TypeII Diabetes.  I do this for me.  I love that I finally seem to have put it together...simple-MOVE MORE-EAT LESS!!

I like my Fitbit but sometimes I go to gym and want to use the stationary
bike or arc trainer and find it doesn't track the steps. I am thinking of
making my activities my goal instead of steps. Has anyone else tried that?

don't know how to adjust the stride distance input, but if I sit around on my day off it only registers about 1-2 thousand steps if I'm lucky

I ride my bike everyday, haven't tried a stationery bike, but have you tried swinging your arms as you pedal?

DDFly,

I don't know how this would work at the gym, but when I use my stationary bike at home, I use painter's tape to tape my Fitbit to the (moving) handlebars. If the handlebars weren't the moving kind, I could tape it to one of the pedals.

Xtalann,

From the Dashboard, click on the "cog" in the upper righthand corner, then click on Settings in the drop-down box. "Stride Length" is the fourth item under the "Body Info" Section.

Xtalann, On the top right corner there is a cog shaped icon. Click that, it's your settings. Then you get a pull down menu and you want to click Personal Info. There will be lots of things to change but you want to change the length of your stride. Where ever you are you can start a step with your toe on a marker, like a corner of a piece of furnature and then step as normally as you can and measure to where your toe is, and that is the length of your walking stride. If you want to do it again as a trot and measure the stride just do your best. Good luck!

Another way to register steps on your stationary bike is to keep your hand on your thigh and push in a downward motion, your wrist movement will register, also with your fitbit on your wrist instead of the bike pedal it will pick up your biometrics and show your intensity level as well.

XTalann, Can you invite me into "looking for friends - 50s and female and getting fabulous!?" I was in the group and hit leave and can't search the name anymore. It won't come up. The community helpers said someone can invite me. I have never seen how to do that. I did ask generally for someone to invite me but nothing happened. So, if you have a little extra time, can you figure out how to invite me back? Thank you for trying even if you can! Barbara

Stride length affects the total distance FB estimates you walked, but it does NOT affect the number of steps. Changing stride will change the distance but not the steps. The math is:

 STEPS x STRIDE = DISTANCE
