Did you mean:

losing weight and in high school

So, im almost 17 and Ive been heavily bullied by other students at school about my weight. My best friend is gorgeously slim and in shape and a runner. Me on the other hand, not so much and running hurts for me no matter how I do it. She has been saying that she is fat and she needs to lose weight when Im around her and it makes me feel horrible about my own self. I've been wanting to lose weight for a while but my mom says "no dieting and you should be proud of yourself, but you also need to lose weight" and it's frustrating because she has a different idea of how I should do it and I feel like I can't do it at all. Ive gained ten pounds in the last month or so. If anyone else has any of these "issues" please, It would be nice to know im not alone.Heart

With best friends like her, who needs enemies Smiley LOL You do not seem to be overweight, but if you feel like you must lose a few pounds, here are the most common reasons for people your age gaining weight: they drink lots of sodas and eat lots of junk food. I know it can be difficult to avoid it because of group pressure: if everyone around you drinks soda, you will feel like doing the same. Same when a group of friend is going to McDonald's or similar. Drink water instead of soda, eat healthy food instead of burgers, pizzas and other fast food and your weight will be in control.

As to exercise, you don't have to run if you don't like it. Walking is a great exercise and your Fitbit is the perfect way to make sure you do enough of it. Your profile shows many days at around 5000 steps. This is low for someone your age. Take 45-60 minutes per day of TV time or Facebook time and go out for a walk instead, so you get your 10,000 daily steps.

Just a side note.  if you truly did gain 10 lbs in a month, that might be something to talk to/see your doctor about.  perhaps you have an underlying medical condition like hypothyroid or similar?

Hi sweetie, I'm sorry to hear about your circumstances regarding the bullying. I was also bullied in high school and it was terrible.
In terms of weight loss, you can easily make some small changes that you can start to do, like avoiding soft drinks, drinking more water, reducing portion sizes of carbs but increasing veggie intake and maybe going on a 30 minute walk 3-4 times a week. If mum makes any comments, you can say something like the walk helps you to relax after school etc.
You could also do some work-outs in your bedroom, there are tonnes on YouTube.
Good luck!

I understand how you feel right now. I've always had trouble with my weight, and kids in school teased me relentlessly. Even after I changed schools between middle and high school, the teasing didn't stop, the faces just changed. I struggled frequently with binge eating and trying diets. I even tried sports and working out two hours on top of that every day. But like most people on here will tell you, you can't work off a bad diet.

I'm going to be honest, because you are in high school, you are at one of the most challenging times for your body. You live in your parent's house, under their rules and eating habits, your friends pressure you to eat and try new things, your body is growing and changing and messing with everything from your metabolism to the way you think, and you're taking on steadily more responsibility as you gain a heavier work load at school, possibly with a job on the side. If you try to overhaul and change your whole diet and routine, your body will rebel, your friends will probably pressure you to "act like yourself" and go back to old habits, and chances are you will hate it.

The thing that helped me change my diet was to make small changes. Someone above suggested water instead of soda, that's perfect. Instead of a burger, get a wrap. Be willing to try new things, and find new healthy recipes that you enjoy. Hell maybe you'll find you like cooking so much you'll want to be a chef. You're at a point in your life where the world expects and fosters your experimentation. If you think eating one food will make you feel guilty after, find an option you'll enjoy that won't. Perhaps suggest to your parents some new recipes you want to try, and help them make it. Go with them to the grocery store and pick out fruits and veggies. Since they provide most of your food, you'll need their help stocking the kitchen with healthy options.

Just remember that you can do it. Baby steps and small changes are a great way to get you started. If you ever need help or a place to vent, feel free to message. 🙂
