what is a safe weight loss per week?

How much weight is considered safe to lose per week?

I usually lose 1-3lbs a week. On March 4 I was weighing 290lb and I am 5'10. I now weight 255. My goal is 220 by the end of the year. It is getting harder now but I look for the challenge.

1-2 lbs a week seems to be the best.  Try to think about what your eating.

It's all about calorie intake vs. calorie expenditure, but it's also much more than that. It's about proper calorie intake. Proper calorie intake is about eating the right kinds of calories at the right time of day. You can't set a goal of 2,000 intake caolries and eat whatever you want or whenever you want to. In my humble opinion, you want to eat about five to six meals a day with a break down of 40% protein, 30% good carbs, and 30% percent good fats while limiting your sodium intake at the same time.

You want to start your day with protein and give your metabolism a jump start. I suggest finding a meal replacement shake for the morning that contains at least 15 grams of protein per serving. Get yourself a small mid-morning snack (a protein if possible) and then move on to a small but managebale lunch (this is hard for me because I tend not to eat lunch). another protein snack in the after noon followed by a manageable dinne and maybe a small desert after dinner (I like to blend Stoneyfield yogurt with forzen fruit to curb my sweet tooth).

Drink lots of water through out the day and try not to eat within two hours of going to bed. I guarantee that,  if you do the above and get at least 30 minutes of exercise each today, not only will you lose weight but you'll completely change your body shape (they're not always the same thing).

If you're eating properly and exercising daily there really is no incorrect amount of weight you should lose in a given week.

I've lost an average of 5 pounds per week using the plan above and I see no reason why I won;t continue at that pace until I hit my goal weight...Best of luck to you all.

If the weight isn't coming off please talk to a doctor.  I know people here are saying it is simple as eat less exercise more but there are medical issues that can hinder this "it is just this easy" attitude.

its more burning the fat into muscle and eating right and working out 4 or 5 times a week. change up ur workout so u can keep ur body guessing so ur body does not get to use of the same routine. im in the army and i burn 8 to 9 thousand calories a day and i weight 205 and im 5'10. its more will power then starving urself.

1-2 lbs a week is a very good weight lose as long as the weight keeps comming off. It takes a little longer but it stays off.

Amen to that brother! I have been doing Weight Watchers for 4 years, which is the best life change going, and they say .5 to 2 pounds a week is healthy ; especially to keep it off. But beware, it is oh soooo easy to gain if you back slide. Sounds like you've got this, though. Congrats and Good Luck to you!!!

After my first week of exercising and watching what I ate, I lost 4.5 pounds, most of which I'm assuming was water weight.  The week after that was 3.6 pounds, which was probably more of the same.

Since then it has swung back and forth between half a pound and 2.5 pounds lost, and I have felt good either way, so I'm thinking it's a healthy rate.  And it does seem to come in waves, where I won't lose for a few days and then I get a big drop suddenly.

I do think it really depends on how much you have to lose and individual situations.  If you have 300 pounds to lose, then 10 pounds a week isn't shocking.  If you only have 10 pounds to lose and you lose it all in one week, then it's pretty serious.

I think the answer is very much individual.  1-2 pounds per week is considered safe.  But it also depends upon exactly how overweight you are.  If you're so overweight you're to the point of being morbidly obese (like the Biggest Loser contestants) you're going to lose more weight per week in the beginning and you're going to lose it a lot faster than someone who is just moderately overweight. Of course the speed of that weight loss will taper off the more pounds come off, but it's something to be factored in.

Depending on what you ate on the bad day; your cheat day may throw off your caloric deficit for the week.

I am sure @Heybales and @SunsetRunner know more about this. Cat Happy

You basically admitted to being human.  Not too scandelous.

You move on and eat better today.  Seriously, that's it.

I ate junk yesterday too, and now I'm eating right today.  It happens.  You just try to make the junky days less and less frequent, and the overall effect is for better.

I'm definitely not an expert.  Woman Frustrated

But it seems to work best for me if I eat more natural foods, keep the carbs to around 1/3 my intake, lift heavy (seriously - heavy!) weights a few times a week and get in some kind of activity that keeps me moving three or four times a week.

But I'm not super strict about the food, as long as I'm within the calorie restrictions and don't go too low either.  Sometimes (like yesterday) the calorie thing goes out the window too.

I'm very serious about either going to the gym or going out for a run on my own three times a week, though.  That's the one thing I won't ever fudge on.

Hey, I'm 50 years old with a bum hip, a frozen/torn shoulder, and all-over hypermobility that causes my knee to occasionally pop out and then right back in again.  And I started running a little more than a month ago.

Starting is half the battle.  Sticking to it is the other half, and it's MUCH harder.  You can do it.
