cretia - I don't care much wearing my Fitbit Surge at night either: it tends to catch and snag on sheets, etc. However, it will then register my minimum heart rate, which often is a good indictor of fitness status. Some people have a naturally slow heart beat. Other than those, as a general rule, better fitness means your heart pumps more efficiently. So one's minimum resting heart rate tends to be slower than otherwise. It might be only from 66 to 61 BPM. But I feel it is worth more than merely counting steps. Just my 2¢ worth.

Got my fitbit a week ago. Would love some friends to bounce ideas off of and/or compete with. The community seems really friendly.  Tempted to post a few questions about food because I think that is where I think I need the most work.

Be aware that you will not find "the" answer.  First, there are a wide range of nutritional philosophies, many of which have merit.  Also, what works for one person may not work for another.

But ask away!  I would start another thread for it, though, or do a post search to see if someone has asked the same questions and gotten great feedback already.

thank you so much trying to understand how it all works without asking how
it all works in terms of calories burned vs intake because right now i am
below 1400 calories normally and i am always below what i should be as far
as my weight says. I will post in another thread

Hi Everyone! I am a Brand New Member of the forum as of today!  My name is Kimberly and I am new to the fitness tracker world. I am a Zumba® instructor and wanted a way to count steps during class, as well as approximate calories burned. I also have sleep issues so wanted a way to gauge the amount of sleep I was actually getting so I went with the Charge HR.

I purchased my FitBit on Saturday, charged it and went dancing for my Birthday. To my surprise, I logged 11,977 steps in a matter of 115 minutes and now have found I have a new addiction! I LOVE my FitBit so far!! I love being able to track my heartrate, and can't wait to share step info with the classes I teach!

I just wanted to introduce myself and say Hi!

Kimberly - My what a nice intro! I'm sure I don't speak alone by welcoming you to Fitbit, it's Forums and discussion groups. I got a Charge HR for my wife and have a Surge myself. AHapy to learn you are really liking your new wearable device. You'll likely get a lot out of it for yourself as well as helping many others. You should ask if you can get members of your class a groupl discount or something! Smiley Very Happy Here's to hoping you'll enjoy your start for new experiences and success with fitness goals for you and your classes!

Thanks for the welcome! That is a good idea about the group discount. I will see how many might be interested and check into that. Thanks!

Don't get their hopes up too high. I've not seen any real discount for any
of the latest Fitbit models. I'm sure they'll be happy to take your order
for one or 101. I'm merely suggesting you ask. They may say, "No discount."
But it doesn't hurt to ask. Maybe suggest you might order at least
(whatever) if a discount. Of course, some may prefer the Charge HR like
yours; other may want one with more or fewer features. My Surge was $250.,
wife't Charge HR was $150. Also be sure to note sizes are model-specific.
That is, one may order a small Surge but her twin might want the Charge HR
and needs a large or some such. Also, it some use a PC while other use a
mobile device to sync to, they may not be able to join the same Challenges,
if that matters. Just FYI . . .

Watch the Fifbit stock. It has recemtly and my husband suggested that it's going to take a big dive soon. That is always an indicator of a healthy company with a quality product. In a recent survey, of the 30,000 people who have Fitbits, only 18,000 are actually using them. something has to change.

Yeah, I decided not to push it, but just let them know steps at the end of class. It has already had some effect, lol. One lady said she just got one for her birthday and now wants her kids to set it up for her so she can start using it!  If I see enough people are interested, maybe I will persue the group discount possibility.

Not doing too bad so far, only had it on for 68 hours or so and have already logged 47,287 steps!!

KSkeie - And I imagine that isn't something you strive for but simply did
in the course of your usual lifestyle. Some may say Zumba is cheating. But
I say exercise is what we need and you're doing. What might help you in the
long term is to evaluate if you are stepping it up from your usual. If you
do, then it will prove its worth. Yet, I think you could benefit from
evaluating how much time is spent in the upper heart rate zones if that is
available, especially if you are more active than most to begin with. Being
an instructor, I believe you know what you are doing and where you want to
go with the device. Cue us in on what you feel are your goals, if you don't
mind. As I've recently said, "I don't think marathon runners have serious
discussions how many steps they take," if you know what I mean.

You are correct, that was simply what I did in the course of my usual routine. I am not a runner, so I am unaware of what others might consider cheating in step numbers. I was just amazed at how many steps I actually DO take per day. I never would have imagined it was as high as it is, lol.  As for why step numbers matter to me, I just wanted to be able to share an approximate number with my participants in case they also have no tracker/pedometer experience and have no idea how much we really move in class.

My original goal in purchasing mine was to track sleep, heartrate, and of course steps. Now that I have used it and realize the potential, my goals are evolving. I do love that I can track heart zones and will be using the data to show me when I need to be stepping it up for better effectiveness. I have to say my favorite feature is the sleep tracker. I sometimes have a lot of issues with restlessness at night, and always wondered how much sleep I was actually getting. Although it is something I have no control over, I do like knowing how often I toss and turn at night.
