Counting Extra Steps? Best Practices?

Steps/Exercise question: Sometimes (probably most of the time) it seems like fitbit may give me 'extra' steps when I log exercise (treadmill walking). What's the best practice for this sort of thing. For example-I am walking on the treadmill last night-and when I get off my fitbit is sync'd and it shows that I have just barely over 12k steps for the day. Then I go to the exercise section and add in the start time and the duration of my walk and the total miles-which I usually under estimate for this part (if the treadmill says I went 2.15 miles I put in 2 miles, etc.)-when my fitbit goes back to my dashboard I am now magically over 13K. I always make sure I use the exact start and end time that I actually started because I know it 'thinks' it won't double count steps-but it really seems like it, while not necessarily double counting steps-but adding in more somehow. Thoughts? Suggestions?

Also, there are times while I am on the treadmill I will open the app just to see an estimate on where I am step wise-to see how much longer I need to go since I am aiming for 12K/day, and the steps I am taking seem to align well with the steps being counted at the time with the app.

Hi, @AmandaMM! If you add a walking activity, it will overwrite your steps for that period based on the distance you input. For something like the treadmill, you don't really need to input it as an activity. Your tracker should pick it up very well without it. It's not double-counting your steps, it's just updating them based on what they think you walked from your activity.
