Fitbit One showing way too many calories burned every day after switching from Fitbit Surge

Lately my Fitbit One has been reporting large calorie burns every day for my body weight.  I'm a 5'1 female, approx 155 lbs.  According to calculators online, I should burn approximately 1950 calories per day doing regular daily activities.  Most days I don't reach my step goal.

I exported my Fitbit data to excel.

  • In early January, my FitBit Surge was reporting that I was burning an average of 1890 calories per day.  This is in line with what I would expect.  Average 6974 steps.
  • My FitBit surge started to act strange and wouldn't stay on for long periods of time any more.  I ended up going back to my previous model, the FitBit One.
  • After January 9, my Fitbit dashboard started to report larger calorie burns every day,  Since January 9, my average calorie burn is reported as an average of 2606 calories per day.  Average 9961 steps.  fitbit.PNG

I only averaged approximately 3000 more steps a day prior to Jan 9 compared to after.  I was not doing any exercise, just daily walking at the office and chasing around my kid.  Would 3000 steps really account for approximately 700 calories of extra burn per day?  That seems like way too much!  Would switching from Surge to One have anything to do with it?

I'm trying to use the Fitbit to gauge what my calorie intake would be (linked to MyFitnessPal), but the amounts it is recommending to eat with a 2lb per week deficit seem way too high.  Thanks!

@pange I hope you're doing well! Thanks for reporting this change in the calories burned tracked since you changed to the One. Thanks for sharing the screen shot too.

Usually, when there is a high amount of calories burned; it has to do with your personal information (height, weight, age, gender, etc.) that was set on your dashboard.

I'd recommend double checking your personal information just to make sure it is correct. Perhaps, there is a typo or something alike that may be causing this.

Also, take into consideration the BMR calories that already show on your dashboard since the beginning of the day. Check this helpful article for more details.

Another way to keep good track of calories is by creating a food plan. Check this post to get all the details about the food plan.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted! Smiley Happy
