It used to hold charge for upto a week. Then it started dying in a day. Now, the battery stays at empty even after being plugged in for days. My One wont charge at all. Is there a way to know if the fault lies with the device or the cable?

Based on how old it is, I would say the battery has given up.

Welcome to the community!
You can replace the battery on a Fitbit One; I posted a walkthrough a few months ago, now the charge lasts for about a week. It's doable for someone handy with tools.
I hope this helps.
