@last8 Welcome to the Fitbit Community! Sorry to hear it was washed. Have you tried putting it into a bowl of rice? Usually that helps removing the moisture inside the tracker. Now, for the new one, you need to activate "all day syncing". Open the app, tap the tracker tile, scroll down and locate "all day sync" and activate the toggle. I left a picture below showing how that looks. Feel free to check this article about real-time data on the app.
Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes!

I am just curious about this @last8. Why would you want to track your steps in real time with your phone when a quick click of the button on your Fitbit One or a quick tap on the display on your Charge (not sure which one you currently have) will show your metrics in real time? Is this not better/faster than holding/opening the phone? I don't have and don't want ALL DAY SYNC turned on and force a sync instead when necessary, maybe once or twice a day at the most. Otherwise, I rely on the One and Charge displays to gauge where I stand throughout the day. Unless you have an unlimited data plan on your phone, this all day sync will crank up usage big time, will it not?
