One calculates movements as steps

Hello,

So I just realized that my Fitbit One has been calculating non-step movements as steps. I was grabbing something with my hands and with each movement it was adding steps. Obviously the steps on my dashboard are incorrect. Is there a way to stop this? If not, how can I know what are real steps and not? I'm recovering from hip surgery and walking is the main post-op therapy. I was hoping the Fitbit would help me keep track! Please let me know what you have done to fix this. Thanks!

@digitalmagistra Welcome to the Fitbit Community! The best thing to do is to change the dominant hand setting to "dominant" as that will decrease sensitivity towards step counting. That should help you track the right amount of steps.

Try that out and let me know how it goes! Smiley Happy

Hello,

So I have a Fitbit One. I bought a wrist band off eBay so I could use it more like a Flex. But I discovered that it was calculating certain arm movements (like grabbing something for example) as steps. I've stopped using the wrist band but wanted to know if there was a way to use it but in a way that counts only steps as steps. Not sure if that clarifies. Thanks!

@digitalmagistra Thanks for your reply and the clarification! Yes, the best ways to wear your Fitbit One for it to accurately track steps are the following:

  1. In your pocket.
  2. Clipped on your pocket facing inward.
  3. Clipped in your bra.

The one is not designed to be worn in direct contact with the skin. Always use the silicone holder when clipping it to a bra or waistband, with the display facing outward. Do not wear the One inside your bra.

Hope this helps. Let me know how it goes! Smiley Happy

Yes, that helps. But I noticed that you said it was designed for direct contact with the skin. If it's in a pocket, that is not direct. It seems like the wrist band would be more direct than that. Oh well!

I guess the bottom line is that the wrist band while convenient is really not good due to the inaccuracy it presents.

Thanks for your help. I am finding the FitBit helpful to track post-operative therapy via walking.

@digitalmagistra Sorry about that, got a typo there, instead of "note", it was "not". I already changed it. So, the One is not designed to be worn in direct contact with the skin. Clip-based trackers are very accurate. I'm glad to hear that it is helping you a lot to track post-operative therapy! That is simply awesome! Thanks for that feedback.
