Black Screen After Smiley Face on Charge 4

I recently was challenged by the loss of my Charge 4 display and found this message board while searching for help.  While I didn't get a lot of help from folks on the board I did solve my problem and wanted to publicize the solution to help others.  The main problem, at least for me, was the connection of the battery charger to the device.  After multiple failed attempts over a 3-4 day period, I clean the charge points on the charger and device with alcohol.  After cleaning off the charge points I reattached the charger and it worked.  Symptoms other than a black screen were vibration for 8-10 seconds and a smiley face.
