So, fresh out of the box . . . I have of course removed the plastic strip, put the cord in a working USB slot, clipped it onto the Fitbit, making sure everything is aligned . . . the battery icon comes on--and that's it. No charging occurs. Have had it in the charging port yesterday and all last night. What can I do?

Hi @eoakley where did you get it? The Charge 2 was retired quite a few years ago. Sometimes when a Fitbit has been sitting with a dead battery, it might not come back to life.
