The only answers to my question as to why my charge 3 is not resetting calories after midnight is that it's counting calories that I burn while I sleep. Well, don't you have to be wearing the fitbit while you're sleeping to do that? When I get up in the morning everything is reset except the calories. My charge 3 has not always done this. This event started happening about a week ago. Could it be the software?

If your calories burned are truly not resetting at midnight, then they would be still increasing, higher in the morning than when you went to bed. Is that happening?
You do not have to be wearing the fitbit for it to be registering calories burned. Your BMR (basal metabolic rate) calories that you are always burning by being alive are always credited, even when you are not wearing the fitbit.
If you click on Calories burned on phone app, then scroll down to any day in the past and look at the bar chart of calories burned throughout the day, I expect you will see calories burned for overnight, even back to before you realized this happening.
See How does my Fitbit device calculate calories burned? for more on BMR calorie burn.
