Can I use a screen protector over HR sensors?

Will it affect the heart rate monitoring on a Charge 3 if I apply a small strip of screen protector over the LEDs and sensors on the underside of the tracker? 

A family member has a problem with the clear plastic coating on these sensors becoming ‘cloudy’ over time and eventually (12 – 18 months) the HR stops working. I think the cause may be the regular use of insect repellant sprayed indirectly near the wrist during the summer. This has occurred on a Charge HR and a Charge 2 so far.

Thanks for the suggestion, but was not able to find protectors on Amazon specifically designed for the underside heart rate sensors.  I'm going to make my own by cutting down an extra Charge 3 screen protector.  Curious to see if it affects the HR monitoring.
