then I get sideways battery with ! in it and then the black screen.
This has been going on for 2 weeks. Tried cleaning contacts, restarting fitbit as indicated in help instructions multiple times. Turned off all notifications and automatic sync to phone. I am charging it using my computer. tried different USB ports. Mobile syncing devise is iPhone.
Any other suggestions? Is there an update to correct this problem?

I have the exact same issue...I will be very interested to see how you situation is resolved.
Edit: I have tried "rebooting" the device a couple times every time I put it in the charger. Still no luck. This is a very sudden thing too...not like I have had any indications my Bit had any issues.
Update: Since posting these questions about the battery life and my Charge2...all of a sudden (mmmmmm....really?) it is now functioning as it did before. This behavior went on for 4 days. And all of a sudden it is taking and holding a charge. I smell a rollback of an update...and if that is what fixed it then YAY!! Thanks Fitbit.

Same issue here! Charged for several hours yesterday and the battery died shortly after removing it from the power source

I just started having the same issue, after reading around it sounds like it's just the end of its life sadly. I got mine 12/25/16 and I've tried the cleaning, the restarting, and continue to get either the ! or an image of a full battery then it dies 10min later. If anything, try contacting Fitbit, but others have said that it's a waste of time
