So, having had a couple of Charge 3s go to a non-responsive black screen, I bought a couple of new ones (at a discount, of course.)
One I updated the firmware of, and boom! Within 3 days it had the dreaded black screen of death.
The other I have not updated the firmware (despite the app being annoying as a result, as it keeps prompting me). The result? 4 months later, and no black screen of death.
I'll keep monitoring, but it makes me think...

Please restart your Charge 3 as suggested here How do I restart my Fitbit device? If the restart doesn't work try to change your clock face. If this fixes the issue, you can change your clock face back to the original clock face.
