Until now I had been pleased with Fitbit. No longer. My Charge 3 recorded 62 floors of elevation- while playing tennis. It would record 10 floors a day in my ranch home, that has no stairs. It would record totally different elevations on the same trail I wore my Charge 2 on.
After several calls to service and rebooting, etc, they finally agreed to replace it. It took a full month to mail it in and receive another. SAME problem and they just keep telling me that they are researching the issue. And they will get back to me soon. They never do. And they refuse to refund my money because their refund policy is based on the initial purchase!
So they sent me a replacement, but that meant I would be out of their refund window. Now they have the GALL to email me ads for their Charge 4!

It's great to welcome you, @SunsetRunner.
I am sorry for the delay in response and understand how are you feeling. Your device uses both an accelerometer and altimeter to track floors, and registers a floor when detecting continuous motion combined with an elevation gain of about 10 feet.
Your device may give you credit for extra floors for a variety of reasons. Devices may track floors while doing everyday tasks such as opening doors, driving, or riding elevators or escalators, or from abrupt weather and atmospheric pressure changes Exposure to excess moisture can also result in extra floors.
Let me know if you need anything else. 🙂
