I have read similar posts & tried the suggestions but none have worked. 
where is settings on my actual Fitbit?! Can’t check the brightness if I can’t find settings!

For Settings, scroll right from clock face through apps.

But more likely you are in Sleep Mode.  Hold in side button a few seconds; look for Sleep below DND and try tapping that.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
