My heart rate monitor was registering 170bpm for nearly all day today, whilst I've been sat at a desk for most of the day & the battery is going from fully charged to dead in a day. My device was working fine until last week.
I've emailed Fitbit support but they are useless & after 5 exchanges with them I am no further forward. It looks as though other users are experiencing similar issues so this could be a known malfunction? Can anyone help?

I understand how are you feeling. Since you already opened a case with support, I recommend keeping in touch with them. I know they will be glad to help you out and provide you a solution.

Since update I also am having issues with heart rate...mine is not registering even though in settings it is ON. I have not been able to monitor sleep for 3 days😴😞. The battery life is awful! I normally can go 8 days. I have had to charge twice in 3 days! Unacceptable! Have had contact with support thru Twitter but no help! This looks like my last Fitbit device which is sad. I have owned for 10 years starting with the little Fitbit one that I hooked to my bra. Loved it. I went from Charge 2 to this Charge 3 for battery issues and it was only 2 years old. I think Fitbit sabotages the device so you have to upgrade every 2 years. Not this time!!! Plentu of other fitness trackers out there.
