I find the Charge 2 had a darker screen, the 3 I can barely read it, in fact never try, just grab my phone to read the time and steps

Hold the left button for 2 seconds and you will see DND , Sleep and Screenwake. Ensure that the Sleep option is not on, if it is on it will be showing a moon. If it is on tap it and normal brightness will be resumed.

 

I had same problem where I couldn't see it when outside. Changing this setting brought things back to normal. Hope this helps someone else here with similar issues.
