Charge 3 treadmill information inaccurate

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I use the treadmill exercise option on my Charge 3. It doesn't register steps/distance correctly for me. For example, I ran (2 miles (by treadmill distance) and the Charge 3 registered 2314 steps/1.01 miles.

There doesn't appear to be a way to edit the distance in the Activity Log. I have been manually entering the workouts and deleting the Treadmill ones that correspond. Is there a way to edit the Treadmill workout distance, or a way to get the Charge 3 to register the steps/distance better?

When I walk or run outside, the Charge 3 seems to register things correctly.  It appears to only be a Treadmill Workout issue.

Thanks!

Hi there @jkusty, welcome to the Community Forums. Thanks for the details provided.

While reading your post I was wondering if you were holding onto the treadmill side rails?  If so, the tracker cannot detect your number of steps since your arm is not moving.  If you walk with a normal arm swing on the treadmill, it should count the proper number of steps and calories.

Also, remember that if you are using the Treadmill exercise mode on the Charge 3 it will use the Walking Stride Length and not the Running Stride Length for calculating distance from the number of steps.  This will cause the distance to be off substantially. So, if you are running on the treadmill, it is better to use the Run exercise mode, assuming you have correctly set up the stride lengths for Walk and Run.  But, it is important that your arms swing freely in order for the Charge 3 to count steps, and not held next to the body.

In regards to edit the distance, please note that auto-detected exercises and exercises you start through the Fitbit can't be edited, only the ones you manually log in. With that said, I would like to suggest you to check the following article in how your stride length influence in the distance of your exercises and how you can edit it to improve the accuracy on them: Can I change my stride length in my Fitbit account?

Give it a shot and let me know the outcome.

Using "Run" instead of "Treadmill" did not change the number of steps recognized.  It did make the distance for the registered steps more accurate.

I am not using the treadmill rails, and I think it is a normal arm movement (certainly similar to non-treadmill running).

Today a three mile treadmill run registered as 3127 steps and 1.37 miles on the Charge 3.

Is there a way to simply edit the workout with the correct stats?

Hi there @jkusty, thanks for getting back and following the tips and recommendations I suggested above.

Please note that auto-detected exercises and exercises you start through the Fitbit can't be edited, only the ones you manually log in.

If you manually logged your treadmill, I would like to suggest you to force-quit the app, then open it again and edit your exercise. If you're still having trouble or if you're unable to edit the exercise, please reply to us with a screenshot of what you're able to see, this will be very helpful for us to check this further. If it still seems like your device is undercounting or overcounting steps, try a step test. While you perform your step test, make sure you:

-Walk at a normal pace
-Don’t hold anything in your hands
-Put your arms down at your sides, swinging naturally
-Count 1 step for each foot
-To avoid getting an additional step when you bring your feet together, after you reach 100 steps:
1. Freeze in a split-stance.
2. Move your hand up gently to check the step count on your device.

Here’s the step test:

1. Restart your Fitbit device. For instructions, see: How do I restart my Fitbit device?
2. Put your device on your wrist.
3. Walk 100 steps, making sure to count a step each time one of your feet touches the ground.
4. Pause, then check your device to see your step count, and write down the number of steps you took and the number of steps your device counted.
5. Perform the test 2 more times, walking 100 steps 3 different times. Each time, write down the number of steps you took and the number your device counted.

Thanks for your patience and understanding, I'll be waiting to hear from you.
