I had to do this at least 6 times before getting the smile to show. Be sure the connection in back is really touching. When I disconnected the charger it immediately showed the battery power and is now swiping fine.

I tried the restart solution but I never see the smiley icon. I see the clock and my BP and it seems to be tracking my steps as I can sync but I am still unable to swipe in any direction.

I changed the clock face to an analog version and set an alarm. I did the sync and that seemed to fix my swipe issue.

Mine wouldn't swipe. Came here read the solution. I am at work and did't have my charger cord handy, so I thought, " What if I go to app on my phone and make a change to a setting for my Fitbit? This should reset it, right?" So, I went into the settings and changed my clock face. This did reset the Fitbit and I was able to swipe again.
UPDATE
This did not work for me. What did work was changing a setting in the app on my phone. Read my other reply for further details.

Tried to follow the solution you offered, but I don't see a battery icon. I have now for a couple of days a locked screen with time, date and km's and calories. Can't swipe, can't do actually anything.
