Charge2 recording way too many floors

ANSWERED

For the past month my charge 2 has been quadrupling, at the minimum, the number of floors I climb each day. I have restarted the unit several times hoping that this would help resolve the problem, no such luck. On Monday of this week it had me at 236 floors in one day, every day this week it has been at over 100 a day. Usually, I'm in the 20 to 40 range and consider my stair climbing to be a valuable part of my activity. It's at the point now that I can't trust any thing it records with regard to flights climbed. I'm also concerned that all these extra added flights scew my step count as well. Any suggestions of how to fix this problem would be appreciated.

I’ve had my Charge 2 for 4 days and have exactly the same problem... apparently I’ve done 41 floors yesterday and 99 today. Should I contact customer service?!

It depends on where you are everyday and what you do. If you are very active that can be a factor. If you work in a tall building and/or in a tall living space than I don’t think it should be any trouble. If anything listed doesn’t apply, I would contact customer support.

Hope this helped 😄

Yes, they sent me a new one without any hassle. It's a flaw.

I'm glad you are getting a new one! The only advice I've received is to
clean the contacts. When I do it seems to work for a few days, and then
goes back to recording too many floors.

I'm afraid mine is out of warranty now.

Hey guys! I hope you are doin' great!

@guvs, as my friend @Undyne mentioned, there are several factors that could be affecting the amount of floors that your Fitbit tracks. For example the weather (windy days), work or living in a tall building or walking/running uphills, and this is because of the altimeter, which is a sensor that calculates altitude based on atmospheric pressure. Though your device is designed to look for pressure changes based on elevation gains, pressure changes due to other causes—such as a gust of wind, a weather change, or opening a door—can occasionally cause your device to register an extra floors. So I'd like you to take that into consideration and let us know how it goes.

@Mpod, thanks for the update! Sounds pretty cool that our team has replaced your previous tracker. They are simply the best!

@a_j_b, I hope you are doin' great my friend! Thanks for following the suggestion from Support. Beside that, I'd like you to try to restart your tracker by following the instructions in this post. I you already tried that, and the issue persists, I'd like you to tell me, if you remember, when did you purchase your Charge 2? I'm asking because all the trackers has certain period of warranty depending when and where did you bought it. In the meantime, you can take a look at Fitbit Warranty if you have questions about this.

Catch ya' later!

Hey @bartwig, welcome to the Community! Smiley Happy If your Charge 2 seems to be tracking too many floors, I'd like you to take the following information into consideration. If your device measures floors, it detects floors using an altimeter, which is a sensor that calculates altitude based on atmospheric pressure. Though your device is designed to look for pressure changes based on elevation gains, pressure changes due to other causes—such as a gust of wind, a weather change, or opening a door—can occasionally cause your device to register extra floors. Now, if none of those factors seems to be happening to you, then try to restart your Charge 2. I'm pretty sure that it will improve the accuracy of your tracker.

Hello,

Same issue. I noticed over counting floors. After several days I analyzed the dashboard by day to determine when the tracker believed I was climbing floors. This seemed to relate to when I was riding my motorcycle for daily commute. Interesting, that this would affect the altimeter? The tracker is also auto recording this as a bike ride?

I am going to try some things
1. Clean the altimeter port, and restart (the common suggestion)

2. remove the tracker and insert in my inner clothing somewhere

3. Turn off the GPS "Always" setting

See if I can alter the Trackers false recordings

Ride same route with my bicycle, see if this is a motorcycle only phenomena

Hey @smanthor, let me give you a warm welcome to the Community! Smiley Happy You are totally right my friend, the Charge 2 tracks floors under those circumstances. When you are driving, specially a motorcycle, the vibrations are detected by the tracker as steps and floors, because the wrist Fitbit trackers are designed to record the movement of your arms as steps, however the tips that you mentioned can help you out to decrease the amount of floors recorded while driving. I'd like to add that the "outdoor bike" is tracked by the SmartTrack because it is pretty similar to that activity. My Charge 2 used to track "outdoor activity" when I was driving a car, but I performed a restart and that didn't happen again. So I suggest you to try that out as well.

Mine ended up being a problem with the tracker itself and fitbit replaced it with a new one.

My fitbit HR 2 is registering a crazy number of floors also. I was out walking to and from a DC metro to work today.  We are having crazy hurricane like winds today so could the barometric pressure have caused the error?

Same here! We have a nor'easter coming through and I noticed it registered my floors really high today. I guess it does have something to do with the pressire.

It is cool that support replaced their faulty Charge 2s. But it doesn't
happen for everyone. I called them as well and was told as long as I do a
hard reset and it works again, then mine won't be replaced.

So, I am stuck with doing a hard reset, every few weeks.

Thanks for the suggestion that atmospheric pressure might cause the Charge 2 to log extra floors. Mine logged 113 floors the day of the huge nor'easter here in MA, and that must be exactly what happened. There were winds gusts of up to 60 MPH all day. Glad to know this wasn't an aberration, or that the Charge 2 isn't working correctly. Thanks again. BHM

Hello guys! I hope you are doin' great!

I can see that for some of you, the weather conditions are affecting your floors tracked. As I mentioned, the atmospheric pressure is recognized by the Charge 2 altimeter as floors. That is totally normal. If you don't want to have those extra floors on your account, you can negate that data by following the instructions in this post, just keep in mind that by doing this, your steps for the day that you select, will also disappeared.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes guys!
