Does the Charge 4 require a phone

My Charge 2 died and I am trying to replace it- there are four things I need in a tracker

  • Count steps
  • Count floors
  • Track heart rate
  • Sync to my Windows PC

As best I can tell, I am asking for too much. If I am wrong I would very much appreciate being corrected.

The Charge 4 would be my pick IF it would work with my PC, but it seems limited to iOS and Android phones (tablets).

I assume your PC has bluetooth. If so, you should be able to sync a Charge 4 with your PC (I have never tried this). Be forewarned the web interface is not as good as the Android, which is not as good as the iOS interfaces, but it will give you the basics.

I went to FitBit setup. One thing that is mentioned is "For certain legacy devices, use the Fitbit Connect app to set up and sync your device with your computer." As best I can tell it is basically impossible to get the FitBit Connect app, despite what is mentioned on the FitBit setup page.

You can get the FitBit app from the Microsoft store (Windows 10). Anyone have an opinion how long that will be available? My son gave me his old Charge 2. I'm tempted to buy a Charge 4 and save it until the Charge 2 dies, but I would be rather unhappy to have a Charge 4 that I couldn't use because FitBit stopped making the app available. The release date listed in the Microsoft store is 2012, assuming I got to the right place. Makes me worry whether a PC is a platform that FitBit cares about.

Might I suggest getting your hands on an old/inexpensive android phone or tablet? As long as it's new enough to install the fitbit app, it will do all everything you need. Surely you have a friend with an older phone laying around. You only need wifi & bluetooth.

It is completely and utterly ridiculous that FitBit in their wisdom removed the ability to set up from a PC as was available in earlier models.

It's like they are intentionally trying to destroy their business.
