Exercise tracking not showing heart rate

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.

I've recently upgraded from the charge hr to the charge 2. However I can't get it to track my exercise properly. Its not showing my heart rates for the exercise session now like it did with my charge hr. Is this the model or is there a nack to it?

This is such a joke . Anyone would think we were asking Fitbit to put a bloody man on the moon.

It’s mid-October and this still isn’t fixed.  I sent an actual land mail letter to the CEO over a month ago, mistakenly thinking that might get noticed more in this digital day and age. Wrong.

So, as others have noticed, in using my Charge HR, if i merely have the FitBit app open and just start exercising, the app will automatically track my exercise, but only the heart rate shows up.  If I open up a discrete exercise event in Track Exercise, then I get time, distance, splits, etc, but no heart rate.

This is stupid.  And like others, my ChargeHR is about 3 years old.  Replacing it might be in my near future.  I’ll be researching other brands.  This type of stuff is what makes companies like BlackBerry become irrelevant.  Get a clue FitBit.

Well, as plain old, boring consumer, one that buys these products and keeps companies like Fit Bit alive. I think the above comments are very valid. I was at Rebel Sports looking to replace my Fit Bit with another brand. One that tracks heart rate during physical exercise and acutely displays it after. While I was there a young couple were checking out the same display, when the female said to her partner, “I think there are problems with the Fitbit HR tracking?” I did not even need to say anything. Funniest thing was they spent twice as much for two Garmins.

Obviously Fit Bit don’t care and I would say they won’t be around for much longer.

I agree with you that Fitbits response to this issue is totally unacceptable. I believe that they will not fix this problem, if they really wanted to it would already be done. I guess we won’t know until they come out with a new firmware release.
>From what you said it sounds like you will continue to use your Charge and that you are not using one of the workarounds that are available. Find below the workaround that I use, it’s not as clean as the old method but you get HR and GPS data in one place.

In the app, go to Exercise Shortcuts and add the exercise or exercises that you want to track. If you turn on Connected GPS you will get GPS data from your Fitbit (I’m pretty sure you have to turn off auto recognize for this to work). Now you should be ready. On your Fitbit select your exercise and hold the button in until it vibrates to start the exercise and do the same to end the exercise. I also use the Track function for the real time data and voice cues. If you don’t want to use the Track function you will still get GPS data from the Fitbit as well as the HR data.
Only thing I don’t like about this method is that you have start and stop your exercise from both your Fitbit and phone at the same time.

Don’t count on Fitbit going away, I suspect that the slice of users affected by this issue is small compared to total number of Fitbit users worldwide, I don’t see this as a game changer for Fitbit. In addition Fitbit has signed a deal with Singapore with a potential to be worth millions.

I am so please to have found this thread as I thought I was going mad here.  I see Heart Rate through the day, and if it auto recognises an exercise that shows the heart rate.  If I set an exercise off in the app however, no hear rate is shown.  If I go into the Heart rate history I see the heightened rates from my exercise.  Im disgusted that there is no response from Fitbit on this Fitbit IOS app issue that only occurred when I upgraded.

I bet they’re going to make it a paid upgrade like they did the enhanced sleep info that shows your HR while asleep.  Boo Fitbit!

Thank you for your message.  I saw your early post about this, but, frankly, I didn’t quite understand it.  For example, I’m not sure to what “Exercise Shortcuts” refers.  Same with “turn on Connected GPS.”  I don’t see anything on my FitBit app with those labels.

Nonetheless, what I have done is follow your advice to open an exercise event on the FitBit app.  I do that by starting on the Today page of my dashboard, then tapping on box showing how many days I’ve exercised this week.

The next screen shows the previous days’ exercise events.  I then tap on the stopwatch icon in the upper right corner of the screen.  On the next screen, the GPS shows up and there’s a large red circle with an arrow in it, tapping on which starts the discrete exercise event.  So, if I go for my power walk, this event records my pace, my route, splits and gives me the verbal cues at my splits.

After starting the discrete exercise event, I now also hold down the button on my ChargeHR until it vibrates.  I never realized that, too, starts an exercise event. I thought that was just a stop watch/timer. This event also shows up on the list of daily exercises I mentioned above, giving my my heart rate throughout the exercise, average heart rate, percentage of time spent in the fat burn, cardio and peak heart rates, steps, and calories burned.

Following your advice, two discrete exercise events get recorded for the same exercise, each showing different data from that exercise.  So, while I had trouble understanding your message at first, I think I found my way to your solution.  Thank you!

Your welcome
Sorry, when I made the posts about the workaround, I didn’t think that non-charge2 users would be using this forum. Obviously, this was a bad assumption and I will try to remember that. Your Charge HR does not have the Connected GPS feature and this workaround will not work with your device.
I’m glad you found a solution that works for you, same as charge2 minus the connected GPS.

There is another method to get your HR data in case you forget to start or stop your exercise on the fitbit.
In this method you use the Track function to start and stop your exercise, when you are done you have an exercise with just GPS data, from this you have time, distance and start time if go to the Log function in the app and put these 3 pieces of data in the appropriate places and save, you will get another exercise that has just heart rate data.

Thanks!  I have tried that, too.  And as for the Charge 2 vs. ChargeHR thing, I thought maybe since this string was going on so long, that maybe some features/terms had changed, which is why I kept playing around.

And the reason I was so detailed in my earlier post wasn’t so much for you, but for others seeing this string and needing a little different solution, too.  I wasn’t being critical of your explanation.

All

It is important to remember that this was a correctly working feature and function in the Fitbit app until around 27 July 2019 when the app and firmware was “upgraded”.

We don’t want work-arounds, we want the **ahem** thing to work like it used to! (Absolutely no offence directed to those in the community that have provided them!). Wasn’t this part of the reason we all bought HR trackers?

Also note that if you download your tracked exercise as a tcx file from the web dashboard, it doesn’t have the heart rate data and then downloading the “ghost” workaround with the heart rate data there is no way to sync or merge them (actually the ghost tcx file is empty of HR data!)

What’s a four letter word that starts with s and sounds like Fit??

It’s what is being peddled here by this soon to be Nokia of a fitness tracker company...

Yeah.  Just spent 25 mins with support. Bottom line was : yes. It’s an issue they are working on

Sigh.

Fitbit has become a joke. I have been waiting near 6 months for this HR problem to be fixed, so I just went and bought a Garmin Fenix 5. Very very nice bit of gear. 😁

My Charge 2 hasn’t properly synced for weeks now, if it’s a compatibility issue with IOS 13.1.3 does anyone know if this will be fixed soon? It’s so frustrating, ... my Fitbit recording steps, heart rate and activity but not showing on the app.

As a number of other users reported, my HR tracking during excercise also stopped working at the end of July, hasn't worked since then...

I think this issue has finally been fixed

What makes you say that? Didn't work for my run an hour and a half ago.

I discovered that doing a full data export provides all the heart rate data you could ask for. I was able to browse through a json file, where it logs heart rate in UTC time, and i saw how high my HR got earlier. Would be nice if they just restored that functionality in the app though...

No change for me.  Still broken.

The only change I see is they added a "Premium" tab which only adds to speculation the HR feature was intentionally removed and will only work after you pay a subscription.

Has anyone tried the free trial to see if HR tracking works during GPS activated exercise?

Exactly exactly exactly - I’m sooooo ‘@&$$30’off - and I recently received fitbit email that it was fixed and they were closing this forum - it’s of course not fixed - grrrrr
