Fit bit shows 7 miles on FitBit compared to true distance of around 6 miles.

On a walk today my FitBit when set to Excercise Walk showed 7 miles at the end of the walk.  My Garmin Etrex20 showed 6.04 miles.  So I exported the TCX file from the FitBit and the GPX file from the Garmin.   Here are the results:  FitBit displayed 7.0 miles; TCX file gives 6.3 miles; Garmin display 6.04 miles Garmin GPX gives 6.10 miles.  So it looks like the distance was around 6.1 to 6.3 miles.  Strange the FitBit displayed 7 miles on its face at the end of the walk.  This is not a problem  Just thought FitBit users might be interested.  Another walker uses a Garmin Etrex30 and we often have a small difference between our devices.  The frequency of sampling must be a key for the more your sample particularly  when walking in a curve will make a difference.  Happy excercising and FitBiting.

@grahamm7 , Nice to see you around. Thank you for your message and efforts.

How did you record your walk? Did you start it on the Charge 4 or let it autorecognize it?

Hace you set up you stride length?

I suggest you to have a look at these:

Hope it helps.

When I use my FitBit to measure a walk. I set it to Excercise Walk and start and wait for the GPS to sync.  That is what I did on this occiasion.

The display as I pointed out said 7 miles as far as I remember.  However if you look at the Garmin GPS and the track as measured by the FitBit (via TCX) and the Garmin via GPS the figures are:  6.3; 6.04 & 6.1 miles.  The FitBit track is still a bit higher but the greater the sampling rate the more accurate the track length.  (Think about going round a curve with few samples).  I have not idea what sampling rate the FitBit charge 4 uses when tracking walking.

@grahamm7 , Thank you for your reply and feedback.

Please try tracking your walk without a GPS. This can help us determine what is causing the situation.

Have you tried to setup your own stride length as recommended previously?

See you around.
