So I installed the November 1st update (v3.1.9) a day or two ago and all seemed good. Warnings about the tracker being low on power came up (happens roughly every 3-3.5 days for me) and I thought nothing of it being dead a few hours later since sometimes it throws the warning nearly a day early and sometimes it's about 6 hours before the screen only shows the "no charge" indicator. So I put it on the charger for an hour or so until it's full and everything seems fine. I pull it off of the charger and 2 minutes later I get an progress bar that seems to be in the middle of the firmware update process. "Strange", I think as the device is an older model and 18.128 seems like it was the last firmware update. Some 45 minutes later it's still stuck there. After a few more hours the battery's dead.
So I repeat the process to the same results. I follow the procedure to reset the device, the procedure to remove it and re-add it, and others found in the various forums and the result is always the same; the Charge HR charges up fine, operates fine for 2-3 minutes, then decides to "Update", hang during that process, and drain its battery in a few hours.
I'm not sure if anyone has had this problem as I might be the last person around using a 1st gen Charge HR (this one is actually my 2nd one since the band de-laminated badly on the last one), but it still works well for what I need it to do. I suspect that the Android client update may have something to do with this issue, but I'm not 100% sure.

O.K. figured out what the problem was and it's kind of obtuse. Apparently if you have a slight crack in the front face of the case and the Charge HR flexes backwards (ie. the straps are pulled downwards while the face is pushed upwards by your wrist so that the crack flexes open) it puts pressure on something in the internals that puts it into a pseudo update.
