Fitbit celebrating 10000 steps & then re-syncing & halving the count! 😔

For the past couple of weeks - when I have been out for a walk - I have been surprised by my Fitbit telling me I have achieved 10,000 steps when I know it’s nowhere near! It even syncs to my iPhone that I have reached 10000 steps! Yet when I get home, it seems to realise the celebration was premature & goes back to a more accurate step count! 
Any idea why this has just started happening please? And can it be fixed?
