I have tried changing it to auto and normal. I’ve also tried to reset the device but this didn’t help. The screen is so dim it’s difficult to read and impossible to read when outside.

There's a very long thread about this issue somewhere on this forum. I had exactly the same problem. I rang the customer service and they sent me a replacement which arrived today and the difference is unbelievable.
Apparently there was an update which messed up the brightness.
