It appears that after removing my Charge 2, to shower etc. that the HR stops working. Restarting it sometimes works but to restart it every time I take it off seems excessive.
Has anyone any ideas / solutions please?

Let me help you with your Charge 2 hr sensor turning off and thank you for troubleshooting this issue. I suggest you clean the back of your device with cotton and rubbing alcohol and restart it. Turn the heart rate off, save and sync then turn it on save and sync again. Also check these tips to improve the heart rate reading on your device.
