This method doesn't work at all. I spent quite a bit of time trying to get this unreliable and confusing interface to work. 4 hours later, it finally accidentally came up.
This is horrible and needs a complete redesign.

Actually there is a manual here. Just google fitbit charge 3 manual. Seems clear to me
https://staticcs.fitbit.com/content/assets/help/manuals/manual_charge_3_en_US.pdf
I have left it for a number of reasons mainly too inaccurate.

Thanks so much! Your reply is the only one that actually made sense to me, and actually worked!

I have had that happen too. but after you do it a couple of times, hit the buttons to start til you see timer is started, then you should remember and get it to work for you.

I abandoned Fitbit all together, which stopped my headache. When it measures the pulse while in your pocket, adds about 50 floors while running 30 in min on a treadmill then my confidence is lost. Aside from that I prefer one app for all over some more inaccurate details.

So, I just activated my Fitbit Charge 3 yesterday, I had two Fitbit HR previously. After having the same issue with mistakenly activating a run yesterday but not being able to stop it to switch it to walk, I was so frustrating with getting only the screen when tapping the side that states notification. Same thing happened today, where I carefully made sure I hit walk but it wouldn't end - I never could get to the screen to say finish. Been looking online. Went through the How To Use in the Fitbit App (which was not helpful at all - it only states what things were to exist, but NOT How To Use). Saw all the other replies but yours - the SWIPING DOWN the TOUCH BUTTON ON THE SIDE MULTIPLE TIMES is the answer. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!! (I know caps sounds like I'm yelling but I just wanted to make sure if someone else was looking for a solution they find your solution).

You may follow the instructions to stop an exercise, but it simply doesn't work on Charge 3!!!

I am having problems with this. What is the 'button' you press to stop. The advice you provide is very unclear. There does not seem to be a stop button only a pause button?!

Same as me

The 'button' is on the left side of of the unit. I call it the Side Button. To make the unit
waterproof they had to make the side button with no cracks that water can
get thru so when you look at it you’ll see a slightly recessed area. So instead of sticking out like most buttons it actually is recessed just a little. Push it and you’ll feel a little bump.
Now, instructions on how to get in and out the exercise feature
>From the clock screen;
Swipe left once = EXERCISE/RELAX
EXERCISE – continue swipping left to view the different exercises that you
can chose from. You can change what appears here in the phone app. More
on that later.
Touch the exercise you want to do = START/SET GOAL
SET GOAL – Touch this to set a TIME or DISTANCE goal.
START – Touch this to begin that exercise. It won’t actually start until
you touch the arrow that appears. When you are done and you want to stop
the exercise you must push the side button.
Push Side Button once = PAUSED, push the arrow on the screen when you want to resume
the exercise.
Push Side Button twice = FINISH/RETURN
FINISH, touch this and it will show you the stats from your exercise.
Scroll down to see time, distance, heart rate, calories burned, etc. Touch
the arrow at the bottom of the stats list to get back to the Exercise/Set
Goal screen or push the side button.
RETURN, touch this to get back into the exercise.
I hope that helps, Shari

I just replied to someone else with step by step instruction on getting in and out of the exercise feature but also you can go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aprzLTI_uu8 At minute 4 or so he tells you
about the button and some of his other tips might help you too. This Charge 3 unit is really pretty awesome and once you get the hang of it I think you'll really like it.

So I've now learned for Charge 3
To start an exercise - swipe the screen to left and then tap exercise and select the appropriate one (and be sure to start it). It took me another full week to figure that out.
To END the exercise, along the left slide (the depth) which is the surface with the indention of "button", simply run/stroke your finger down twice (at least I need to do it twice) alongside the "button" surface.
The screen pops up and either the screen shows the "Finish" image and you need to select it, or you slide the screen to see the "Finish".
Hope this helps.
