Invites from strangers - just started happening

Both my partner and I have received invites today from people we do not know. We've checked our privacy settings (doesn't seem to be a way to set privacy for invites) but have never had this happen before. We have friends in a group where we issue challenges but are not interested in hearing from strangers (except answers on this forum, of course). Why is this suddenly happening?

I don't know. I simply decline the request.

Possibly. Just found it odd that both my partner and I received invites the
same day from people we don’t know. Wondered if something wonky was going
on.
