Looking for recommendations for an alternative brand for fitness tracking. I don't need anything fancy, just something to track steps. Key problems: 1) app not working, 2) charging problems, 3) cheap bands
1) App: The Fitbit (android and iOS) apps are annoying - they keep fixing things that aren't broken and end up breaking the core functionality of the app. Examples are dashboards being unavailable, can't engage a rematch on a group challenge, and challenges disappear.
2) Charging problems: The charging cables are too short, and even when I bought a longer after market alternative, the FB design is flawed/positional and I don't know that my device isn't charging until it's too late. I get an initial buzz when it connects, I lay it down and then it disconnects without me knowing. I've found this with the Alta and Charge 3 models. Not sure why they have to make their charging connection like this - why not an industry standard pin configuration?
3) Cheap bands: found a much cheaper and more durable alternative, in case anyone needs an Alta replacement.

There is no perfect fitness tracker @WhiteChocolate and you'll get a variety of responses. I have friends with Garmin and Apple watches and they both keep returning to Fitbit. Many people just get a cheap pedometer because that is all they want. I like the Fitbit experience - from the device to the forums and the app, etc. My friends who left Fitbit miss the interaction with challenges and the forums. They feel more at home with Fitbit. Maybe you just haven't found the right device and group of friends.
