New Charge 4 not recording sleep

I replaced an old Charge 2 with a new Charge 4 - maybe regretting that. The Charge 2 recorded sleep perfectly, the Charge 4 doesn't record it at all. I had to enter it manually, then got the non specific information. It is paired, I removed the old device, customized the clock face, it does register heartbeat, but not sleep. First night with it, so maybe I missed something? If I can't use that, it's going back. I'll just stick with what works. Thanks for any ideas...  :^) gene

Hi @genej101 , thank you for your information and efforts.

If you just received the Charge 4, you need to update it to the latest firmware. (it might take a few days until the update gets released for you.)

You also need to wear the tracker a few days so that it "learns " your resting heart rate so that it identifies when you are sleeping.

Could you confirm if you are not seeing the simplified sleep record or no record at all?

I'll be expecting your reply.

Hi @CiaranMcG , nice to see you around . Thank you for your message.

You are right on your assumption. The display and measurements of the sleep stages is available for the free App use. As long as the Fitbit device is able to record these. There is no need to be a Premium Member to get them .

The following conditions can prevent the recording of the sleep stages :

- You start to record your sleep with the app instead of the automatic sleep detection of the tracker.
- The tracker's battery is almost empty when you go to bed (below 25%). This prevents regular recording of the pulse.
- You use the metal bracelet while sleeping
- You sleep less than 3 hours.
- The bracelet is too loose or too tight on the wrist. You should be able to put your index finger between the bracelet and your arm without great resistance so that your pulse is recorded regularly and the sleep phases can be recognized.

If you tap on the recording that does not show you any sleep phases, you should receive a message explaining why you did not receive any. What is this message?

I started having trouble with the charge 2 and updated to charge 4. My sleep is starting to record my sleep about 2 hours late. This is 8 out of 9 nights. I've spent hours and hours searching for answers. I finally called support on this problem, and followed their directions of changing my sleep time to off in quick settings, turning it back on when I got up and syncing. Guess what? My sleep recording was 2 hours late. Somewhere I read another post from someone that their sleep record was always starting after midnight. That appears to be what mine is doing. I guess I call again to day on my case number and continue.

@feathers222 , Thank you for your message, and for taking the time to contact Support. Please keep your case number whenever you contact them so that they can verify what has been done and advise, and do not recommend you to perform this again unless is necessary. I'll appreciate if you keep us updated and if you find a solution with Support to share it here, so others can try it.

See you around.

The morning I called I had no sleep recorded at all. My conversation with support started with the representative saying he would send me a document to explain things but I persevered and pressed on asking for verbal directions so I could write things down and thoroughly understand. He had me go in and adjust the sleep time of a night manually to correct the wrong start time. This wiped out all of the detailed sleep information for the night I adjusted. This didn't help.

As he explained more, I learned a lot. First off turning sleep on and off manually is putting the Fitbit itself into sleep mode (screen dimmed, no alerts) not recording my sleep. I had totally misunderstood this.

He said the Fitbit "sleeps" when I sleep but recording of sleep takes about 15 minutes to kick in. This affects the total sleep time recorded especially if one gets up in the night. Interesting.

As far as a fix, I was to do the same thing as I did previously, manually put the Fitbit into sleep mode when going to bed and turning sleep mode off when I got up. That morning did NOT result in an accurate reading (still about 2 hours late, still after midnight). I decided to give it another night to kick in since that was the "reset" night. The following morning it recorded my night but went back to starting 2 hours early. That had happened with my Charge 2 also which recorded my Netflix viewing time as "sleep."

Since that was still not accurate, for three nights I adjusted my sleep habit of going to sleep on my left side (Fitbit worn on left arm) as I always sleep on my side with my arm under the pillow. Perhaps this was messing up my heart rate.I did this for 3 nights to really see if it made a difference. Two of three nights still showed a recording of 2 hours of sleep monitoring with very brief light sleep times during my video viewing and one was right on.

Going back to my normal habits it appears a correction has been made but I will still get my nights starting a couple hours early. Still not what I would expect as I do move around the house a lot before actually going to bed. My stats will never be accurate for the week but I guess I am at least able to see the detailed sleep recording if I ignore those first couple hours.

A reset with sleeping the Fitbit itself (one night of putting it into sleep mode) and waiting a night for it to adjust has helped but still not what I would expect. I hope this detailed explanation helps show my controlled experiment and results. Not perfect but better.
