Poor GPS on Smart 4 in all respects

I use my FitBit Charge 4 for walking.  I did have a cheaper walking device but thought FitBit is the Rolls Royce of these devices.  I don't want to so much just count steps but track my walking in miles covered when actually walking as determined by GPS.  So when I start my Walk Activity I say start and then I wait for the GPS to connect and then to connect as I stand outside my house.  In the end I usually give up and let the GPS connect.  The next problem is that if I stop for refereshment in a cafe or a church porch it looses GPS and then IT TURNS OFF the GPS !!  And there is not way to turn it back on so I loose the track for the rest of the journey.  It does the distance but must be using my step distance?  Who wrote this algorithm to turn of GPS with no turn on?  My Garmin GPS walking tracker just tells me it has no GPS but doesn't turn it off.  Picks up when I come out.  Even worse I was doing a local walk went under some lightly wooded area and it lost GPS and turned the GPS off.  The Garmin might loose GPS in a densely wooded canopy but will not turn off.  I am very disappointed with this Charge 4 givewn to me as a present.
